The portion of the image to the right of the arc is in shadow, while the left is directly illuminated by the Sun. (Image: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...)

It becomes really obvious when the Sun is very close to the edge of the Navcam frame, like this one from sol 3973. The top left is in shadow, while the rest is directly illuminated, which causes all of the linear artifacts that appear to emanate from the direction of the Sun.
