Reddit post 18, Parents Locked Fridge, $20 a Week for Food-How Can I Make It Work? Advice I just turned 18, and my parents have decided that since I'm now legally an adult, I need to start paying for all my own meals. They've given me $20 a week to cover everything, and they've locked the fridge and freezer so I can't eat any of the food they buy for themselves. I don't have to worry about school lunches since those are prepaid for the year, but I'm on my own for breakfast, dinner, and weekend meals. I'm new to budgeting and grocery shopping, so this is a bit overwhelming. I'm a distance runner, so I try to eat healthy and need a decent amount of protein to keep up with training. I also have a pretty packed schedule-about 70 minutes of commuting to school each way, four hours of homework per night, two hours of sports practice, and I'm currently working on college applications. I volunteer once a week at a food pantry (ironically), which is how I earn the $20. My mom says I can earn another $20 if I take on a second job, but if I can't handle the extra work, she says I'll just have to go hungry. I know this isn't a unique situation, and I really admire the people my age and younger who are juggling jobs,
