Dripstone Volunteer Restoration Project Cockatoo Island dripstones are believed to have originated from Norfolk Island, a known sourve of colonial dripstones, as large deposits of similar limestone were available. Dripstones were designed to capture and purify water. The porous block of limestone was hollowed out and suspended in a frame. Rain or other water was collected in the bowl and allowed to drain. As water leached slowly through the stone, impurities and particles were filtered out, leaving clear, clean water to seep out below. This was used as drinking water for convicts. The wooden cradle has been recreated based on similar colonial examples. The dripstone cradle was constructed by the Cockatoo Island Volunteer Restoration team.
