Text of motion inc: This conference welcomes the Child Poverty Taskforce & recognises the findings & implications of psychological research including: the interaction of poverty & mental health for children & families; poverty, inequality & uncertainty threaten our basic psychological need to feel: safe; able to make decisions about our life; connected; & valued. the impact of financial instability on stress, mental “bandwidth” & decision making; & better understanding of this would reduce shame, e.g. around budgeting & other choices. the impact of living with poverty on children’s language, capacity to direct their attention, problem solve & socialise at school. that to reduce the impact of child poverty, we must reduce the stigma/shame for people living in poverty.(because of the above) reducing poverty is also a mental health & special educational needs intervention. Include in the Taskforce experts by experience and psychologists; & incorporate psychological research.
