Observational study: Starting from a database of fact-checked URLs (each associated with a title and a veracity rating), we use the Twitter (X) API to retrieve all tweets linking to the URL (either embedded in the tweet or included in its text). A large language model (LLM) is then prompted to identify the presence of Scientific Authority Cues (SACs) within each title. The effect of SACs is then estimated using negative binomial regression models on retweet counts. Experimental study: We select a set of fact-checked headlines and systematically manipulate attribution to a scientific entity. Survey participants are randomly shown headlines with or without such attribution and asked to rate their intention to share and perceived accuracy. The effect of scientific attribution is then estimated using robust linear regression models.
