The last time I was at Shibuya Crossing, in 2014, I crossed the street, went upstairs to have a coffee at the Starbucks overlooking the landmark and spent a nice, quiet 20 minutes watching the ebb and flow of commuters. In 2026 you couldn’t move without hitting a Westerner filming themselves for some kind of content, their cameras raised above them while they narrated the event (whether there was actually an audience I’ll never know), each one an oblivious centre of their own universe while the 1000 people around them were just trying to get past them so they could cross the road and get home. The last time I was at Don Quixote in Dotonbori, I marvelled at a store so big it had its own ferris wheel, bought what I needed and got out. In 2026 the store was overrun, again with Westerners, again all filming themselves for content, blocking almost every aisle on both the first and second floors, each offender desperate to boast in front of a camera that they too had been to the latest spot that had blown up on social media, and that they too had bought the latest viral Japanese skincare product. Any local in there who just wanted to buy a bottle of water was shit out of luck.

But even if it were possible to do away with the sex/gender system, most people do not want a world in which gender neutrality is the new norm. And thesea re not just the bourgeoisie "heteronormative" Christian white male Americans who have assumed the position of bad guy in this new secular dogma. Most transsexuals,homosexuals heterosexuals, bisexuals, ambisexuals, and bisexuals are invested in gender as a category of human social intelligibility. Should their investment be overturned in favor of a theory of genderless utopia? This is not to suggest that the rights of the genderless or genderfluid of genderqueer should be ignored or diminished either. "Gender" itself is not the problem, though. It is used as a tool for control, and that is a problem. Excludiing people who belong in a particular community rom that community is a problem. And annexing someone into a community they do not belong in is every bit as obnoxious as excluding those who do.

A letter: BAMBI BITES BACK We were outraged to read in your November issue slanderous remarks against Bambisexuals. Gerald Hannon in his article, "Devices and Desires" writes, "A lot of men, too, are adamant about being inteersted only in your straight, ordinary, fucking and sucking, cuddly-wuddly sex. They are a group that is coming to be known, somewhat disparagingly I admit, as Bambisexuals." To liken bambisexual play and passion to "straight, ordinary" sex reflects the ignorance of teh author. By the way, what is the matter with "cuddly wuddly sex"? Bambisexuality is /our/ sexuality breaking free of the chains of genital domination, power relations and ejaculation/orgasm. We are free to be silly, to make funny noises, to gurgle, to destroy roles, to forget where we are/who we are with, to cuddle, salivate, explore, play and develop a general body orgasmic release. Eat your hearts out genital primates! It is not sado-masochistic toy lovers who are the wave of the future. They are simply the past living on in the present. They reflect the commercialization and co-optation of the straight identified (STIFF) gay men's scene. We represent play and eros in opposition to those masculine schemes of power. That The Body Politic has seen fit to join in the reactionary chorus against bambisexuality is a sign of great distress to us. An excerpt from THE SIGHTHOUND PARALLEL (Ch. 5): By his own account, the dragon was a former tyrant and despot and bloody warmonger a hundred times over. But… he had repented. Reformed. Retired, largely, but for when it suited the mysterious Overlord to appear in public, making thunderous and attention-grabbing declarations of calamitous intent — frequently to distract capes and cops from whatever much quieter operation the Korps was actually up to nearby. On balance, Abigail wouldn’t have come to trust Maddy, trust Minion and Sub, or cautiously accept the supervillains’ whole elaborately convoluted deal, if she hadn’t been willing to believe that the Overlord genuinely regretted their career as one — well, many — of history’s greatest bastards. The canine knew what it was like to regret a past self, and feel duty-bound to make some kind of amends, even if it could never erase the damage she’d done as Quickstep. Also, she really wanted to suck his cock.
