As someone who has been in the Army since 2007, I think this is a bit backwards; the military is a reflection of political will and social values.
The rot that is currently happening is a direct result of elected officials.
World War II was the exception, not the rule. Korea was cold geopolitics with a dose of stop-the-Asiatic-hordes racism, and even the Civil War started (in North) as a bid to keep the land & economy together. We never erased that Wild West/Confederate martial spirit. It's unbroken, not resurgent.
