A note about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in this class. You are forbidden from using ANY artificial intelligence-derived imagery in this class. This prohibition of AI is the result of its consistent inappropriate use in multiple digital media courses and its resulting negative impacts on student learning and portfolio development. The boundary between original work and algorithmically derived work is amorphous but not so ambiguous that it cannot be identified. AI image generation is a rapidly evolving technical, social, and political topic. The laws needed to deploy it safely and fairly in our culture have not caught up to its rapid development. There is considerable evidence that AI-generated images are based on unlawfully harvested copyrighted works, and as such, you cannot copyright work made from AI image generators and cannot legally use it in your portfolio. Design is a process. Jumping from a text prompt to a randomly plagiarized montage undermines the creative process you are attempting to learn in this degree program. So, do not use Microsoft CoPilot, Google Gemini, Adobe Firefly, MidJourney, Dall-E, Stable Diffusion, or any other text prompt AI image generator to create images for assignments in this class. Doing so will result in a zero for that assignment. Using AI is not just cheating, it’s forfeiting your creative sensibilities, your professional agency, and your unique perspective as a human individual that gives your designs relevance and meaning.
