The flaw the models exploited was previously unknown, but flaws in this kind of software are not unusual. Companies have been patching serious vulnerabilities in artifact repositories for a decade. A bug disclosed in 2024 let anyone who could reach the server ask for a file by URL and get it- configurations files, passwords, access tokens-without logging in. Others have let attackers take control of the server itself. Researchers point out that while Al advances have created new and sometimes unexpected challenges, the task of extensively and rigorously isolating infrastructure from the open internet is well explored. "This is not an Al problem. It's negligence on a 40-year-old standard-and it's basically every sci-fi film ever," says longtime security and compliance consultant Davi Ottenheimer. Highly isolated' and 'escaped through the one hole we left open' cannot both be true."
It's safe to say that Meta executives were furious after Wired published its investigation. After all, the company has a long track record of data privacy violations. The revelation that its "pervert glasses," as some have taken to calling Meta's controversial smart glasses, could soon be using facial recognition tech - not unlike the eyewear being used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents - fueled an existing PR disaster.

Some of the headlines and posts circulating about this are alarming, if not bizarre. So let me clarify: I have been to two Dialog conferences. But, I do not know Peter Thiel. I’ve never met him. I’ve never spoken with him or his representatives. I’ve never seen him at an event. From what I’ve read about his views, we are political and ideological opposites. At the Dialog conferences I’ve been to, there were a wide variety of people, with a wide variety of opinions, some I agreed with, some I didn’t. I can’t speak to every person named in the reporting, but my experience was not of a single ideological gathering. Over the last couple of years, l’ve been focused on trying to make a positive impact on how the future unfolds, especially when it comes to tech and Al. Part of that work means forming relationships with all kinds of people, trying to understand their perspective, and trying to get them to understand mine. Sometimes it’s productive to engage with those we oppose.

Dialog’s algorithm consistently fixates on whether the “average person” would recognize someone. It repeatedly weighs whether people are “widely recognized” or sufficiently “prominent” and, in a handful of cases, measures them against “a Fortune 500 company or a top celebrity.” For example, Reihan Salam, the president of the Manhattan Institute, was given a “B” rating because, it said, “the Manhattan Institute may not be as widely recognized by the average person as some larger organizations.” Salam did not respond to a request for comment. Dialog staff revisit and revise grades after every retreat—an internal process the records call a “post-retreat code review.”
Dialog membership isn't limited to conservatives. Many prominent Democrats or figures associated with left-leaning politics are connected to the group, including Senator Cory Booker, Maryland governor Wes Moore, Colorado governor Jared Polis and LinkedIn cofounder Reid Hoffman. Attendees are asked their political leaning, with the choices being "far left" "left", "right", and "far right."

Its participant form asks registrants whether they are “looking for love” and offers to include “Single Man,” “Single Woman,” or “Other” respondents in “future matchmaking.” A separate site, dating.dialog.org, hosts an app pitched as “meaningful connections for exceptional people.” The form also gathers sensitive answers, including each registrant’s "political leaning,” which Dialog promises “WILL NOT be shared in the app or with other participants, ever.” That data, and the matchmaking responses, were exposed in the leak.
Meta is testing face-recognition software built by a company that sells surveillance tools to police departments and the United States military, as it explores bringing the technology to its smart glasses, WIRED has learned. The arrangement is documented in a software license, obtained by WIRED, that was issued by Rank One Computing—a Denver-based company that derives roughly 80 percent of its revenue from government clients—and is tied to a test version of the Meta AI app that powers Meta's Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses.

Though not yet enabled, NameTag sits inside a Meta AI companion app that's been downloaded over 50 million times and is necessary for use of key features of its smart glasses, including Ray-Ban and Oakley models. If activated, it will transform faces captured by Meta's glasses into unique biometric signatures, commonly known as faceprints, and check each one against faceprints stored on the user’s phone—a database that’s currently configured to receive updates from Meta. Recognized faces will trigger notifications, while the rest are cropped, indexed, and saved to a folder marked “pending.”

The Army says its own access stops at a walled-off work app, leaving a soldier’s texts, photos, and browsing private. But data brokers face no such walls, as its own researchers have already pointed out.
