Worse than that...I have had to hold on to my birth certificate, my 1st marriage license, my divorce decree, and my 2nd marriage license. I needed all of that to show the chain of name changes in order to get a passport and to get my Real ID driver's license.
STOP changing your name ladies! We don't do it in Italy. You are who you are! Married or unmarried you are a person, an individual, at birth you received you name. Why would you want to change that? If the man isn't going to change his name, you shouldn't either. If he can't understand, leave it.
It is also an effort to put women back "in their place".

Add in the children of abusive or divorced parents who want a fresh start, and folks who are born with last names impossible to live down, like Manson. Or anyone else with a reason, good or not, to change their name. It is not for us, or Trump, to judge.

Seems to me like the first step in an attempt by idiots to repeal women suffrage.
The entire effort is to suppress voting, but I do take a little bit of issue with the D vote piece. Substantially more conservative women change their last name. This is an effort to suppress the female vote, regardless of political leaning. That's, IMHO, a more important story.
I know some married women who are looking for affordable ways to change name back. Husbands not happy about that of course...
If I wanted to suppress Dem votes, not sure I would start with "married women who take their husband's last names." The Dems advantage among women is based on absolutely cleaning up among single women.
But it will also affect Republicans women. Imagine their surprise when the ID they use at Olive Garden doesn’t work. They don’t give a shit about disenfranchising any women.

Yes but this goes for MAGA voters as well as Democrats. So what dems ought to be doing RIGHT now is clearly telling their constituents how to get the ‘proof’ they will need. Unfortunately getting these papers cost $$$. Also would be nice to have a step by step tool that tells you your status.

Here's the bomb that'll blow up in the GOP's face: A higher percentage of Republican women will have adopted their husband's name, while a higher percentage of Democratic women (my wife included here) will have kept their maiden name. As with all things, Trump didn't think this one through....
And some women have been married and divorced several times. They will have to secure a chain of birth/marriage/divorce certificates - all with embossed stamps. Blatant attempts at disenfranchising women voters.

Not just suppress Dem votes, as Repub women change names too. It's to target (primarily) women and trans folk. They think women shouldn't vote, and trans folk shouldn't exist.
How hard would it be for a married woman to have her driver’s license reissued in her maiden name? It might be much less time-consuming than getting a passport.
