Democracy Docket @democracydocket.com · 13d

Roughly 70% of women in heterosexual marriages have changed their last name. That means using their birth certificate as proof of citizenship to vote is not an option. This is not a coincidence — it’s a deliberate effort to suppress Democratic votes. Learn more: https://demdock.com/4b15Hbw

Worse than that...I have had to hold on to my birth certificate, my 1st marriage license, my divorce decree, and my 2nd marriage license. I needed all of that to show the chain of name changes in order to get a passport and to get my Real ID driver's license.

Tammy · 13d

STOP changing your name ladies! We don't do it in Italy. You are who you are! Married or unmarried you are a person, an individual, at birth you received you name. Why would you want to change that? If the man isn't going to change his name, you shouldn't either. If he can't understand, leave it.

Dr. O. · 13d

It is also an effort to put women back "in their place".

@exreddituser.bsky.social · 13d

I'm..where's Melania's birth certificate??

Sam · 13d

Again, Republicans misogyny to the forefront.

Including Melania

Add in the children of abusive or divorced parents who want a fresh start, and folks who are born with last names impossible to live down, like Manson. Or anyone else with a reason, good or not, to change their name. It is not for us, or Trump, to judge.

low end · 13d

It affects married women of all political parties.

Bill Tramel · 13d

Seems to me like the first step in an attempt by idiots to repeal women suffrage.

Rini · 13d

The entire effort is to suppress voting, but I do take a little bit of issue with the D vote piece. Substantially more conservative women change their last name. This is an effort to suppress the female vote, regardless of political leaning. That's, IMHO, a more important story.

@beansagain.bsky.social · 13d

I know some married women who are looking for affordable ways to change name back. Husbands not happy about that of course...

William Burns · 13d

If I wanted to suppress Dem votes, not sure I would start with "married women who take their husband's last names." The Dems advantage among women is based on absolutely cleaning up among single women.

@orphanannie1958.bsky.social · 13d

But it will also affect Republicans women. Imagine their surprise when the ID they use at Olive Garden doesn’t work. They don’t give a shit about disenfranchising any women.

Thank you & your legal team for protecting women, & women Voters!!!!!!!!!!

heres another thing - republicans have wives too. dems are smart enough to beat this either way. republicans are dimwitted

What name is on Judy Prance’s birth certificate? It Bowlegged, isn’t it?

It is also a desperate attack on Women’s rights. cbwrong.blogspot.com/2026/07/the-...

Machiavellian policy … has to be the idea of Müller the Nazi and eugenicist.

Raffy · 13d

Do you think they can eliminate just the Democrat voters?

Raffy · 13d

Yes but this goes for MAGA voters as well as Democrats. So what dems ought to be doing RIGHT now is clearly telling their constituents how to get the ‘proof’ they will need. Unfortunately getting these papers cost $$$. Also would be nice to have a step by step tool that tells you your status.

Not Anyone! · 13d

But republicans are more likely to change their name!! And republicans are likely poorer!!

@susiep1030.bsky.social · 13d

Bringing back all the “count only the legal votes” from 2020 where any votes from non-white men should be thrown out. This administration is an all out disgrace!

What if both maiden and married name are together on passport and DL?

@resistance1955.bsky.social · 13d

Here's the bomb that'll blow up in the GOP's face: A higher percentage of Republican women will have adopted their husband's name, while a higher percentage of Democratic women (my wife included here) will have kept their maiden name. As with all things, Trump didn't think this one through....

Steve Leatherman · 13d

And some women have been married and divorced several times. They will have to secure a chain of birth/marriage/divorce certificates - all with embossed stamps. Blatant attempts at disenfranchising women voters.

@grantsodiosa.bsky.social · 13d

Srsly as a layperson with no actual legal training whatsoever I would greatly appreciate any help I can get from anyone on Bluesky to assist me with this issue:

Daffodil Dame · 13d

So the only 'real' proof is a passport which most people do not have. Why the Republicans haven't figured this would also impact their voter base is puzzling. Stupidity comes to mind.

The Sound of Rain ❌👑 · 13d

Never thought I would be more thankful to still have my original birth certificate and my original social card... Though they'll probably still give me shit about it. Those things are 40+ years old. Who else can say they still have them? Not many. 😕

Icagey · 13d

No, it's a deliberate attempt to prevent women from voting, which is the ultimate goal. FFS

Robin Schulberg · 13d

I would bet more Democratic women than Republican women have NOT changed their names. The SAVE Act is an attack on all women but it may boomerang on MAGA.

SailorLife · 13d

I’d need birth certificate, marriage certificate, divorce decree, marriage certificate to trace my various names to match my current name.

Cosmic Breeze · 13d

Not just suppress Dem votes, as Repub women change names too. It's to target (primarily) women and trans folk. They think women shouldn't vote, and trans folk shouldn't exist.

@5thgenfljane.bsky.social · 13d

How hard would it be for a married woman to have her driver’s license reissued in her maiden name? It might be much less time-consuming than getting a passport.

@5thgenfljane.bsky.social · 13d

I’m so glad I have a passport.

Ben · 13d

But will it have the effect they intended? I’m not sure it won’t hurt their voters more than ours.

Flock to Blue🦋🌊🩵🌵 · 13d

Exactly! See through their b s talk and see their intentions! 🙏💙👊 ⚖️🇺🇸⚖️ 💙🗳️💙

Mom against fascism · 13d

So democratic women are more likely to be married and have families is what I am hearing. So we are the family party.
