On a scale from not-dinosaur to very-dinosaur, this Giant Wood-Rail ranks pretty high! It is standing in the middle of a brown grassy lawn, appearing perplexed by a couple of orange chips someone has dropped.

This Common Poorwill is resting with eyes closed upon a bed of rounded cobbles. Every single feather is intricately patterned in overwhelming detail with buff and brown and white - against a backdrop of dry foliage this bird would have instantly vanished.

A vertical yellowish rock face, I believe tilted marine sandstone of the Astoria Formation, formed in the Miocene, now chock full of storm-carved grooves and hollows. These little ledges are handy roosting platforms for a mixed flock of gray/black/white shorebirds that have cozily tucked themselves in to this precarious situation. Look closely and see there are actually two species of "rockpipers" on display here: Black Turnstones and Surfbirds!
This Harlequin Duck is perched on a rock, now looking more obviously ducklike. His slate-blue and chestnut-red plumage is dotted and slashed by a bizarre assortment of white markings.
I promise it's not AI!! This male Harlequin Duck is preening in such a way as to conceal his bill and rotate the white markings on his head so they resemble an eyespot, mouth, and rakish eyebrow. A very weird cartoony effect!
