37 | You're stranded on a desert island, a genie appears and gives you the chance to design your dream theme park. What attractions will keep you company?

HM Government and Universal Destinations & Experiences now have an agreement
in principle that the resort/theme park project will proceed. It is expected that the
planning application will be submitted to HM Government in the summer, with a
decision expected in the autumn of this year. The company have stated that they
intend to construct the resort commencing in 2026, with an opening date in 2031.
The recent announcement is a very clear commitment to the project, which if
planning permission is granted later this year, would significantly impact on the
current Local Plan 2040.
In light of this the Council are currently reviewing the impact on the current Local
Plan 2040, and we will provide a more comprehensive letter stating our position later
this month. In accordance with the Council’s constitution, we will need to take a
report to our Executive on 18th June and Full Council on 2nd July to secure member
approval for the way forward but I will be able to provide a clear indication of the
direction of travel in my update letter later this month.
