We've seen ICE's escalation of extreme violence in Minnesota. We're closing tomorrow in solidarity with Minnesota, and in recognition that we're all affected-directly or indirectly-by racist immigration policies in the U.S. Y'all have supported us from the beginning, because of that we're privileged to be able to show up in this way for our community and the city of San Antonio. Our staff will be paid for their scheduled time tomorrow but this sort of action isn't easy for a small business. Rent is still due on the first. Hi Desirae! Thanks for this email. It is nice to be able to connect with Online students - I sometimes feel online classes can be very impersonal. I've read Spillover and a friend send me "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks", though I confess it is still on my nightstand. I started "Invisible Women" - also sent by a friend who knows l'm a little bit of a data nerd. (Haven't finished that one yet either). Lately, l've been (somewhat embarrassingly) reading either Epi textbooks (looking for better ideas on how to present information) or 'cozy murder mysteries'. I hope your enthusiasm sticks around for the whole class. We don't get to ID epi until toward the end of the semester, but it is worth the wait!
Several years ago, I bought David Quammen's "Spillover: Animal Infections and the Next Human Pandemic." I think it was early 2020 when I bought it, very early COVID-19 for the US, and I was trying to manage the anxiety I felt by first trying to understand things like zoonotic diseases. As much as I enjoyed what I read, I was struggling to understand, so l decided to set the book aside, continue reading and learning, and eventually come back to finish that book. Now it's August 2025, and I have never picked up the book again, but my interests are all over the place when it comes to public health! I've read about various waves of diseases that we've seen in the US, the creation of the contraceptive pill, the history of quarantining during illness, and the legacy of Henrietta Lacks. I feel as if trying to read Spillover awoke something in me and led to an incredible urgency to learn. I think that after this class ends, it would be the perfect time to attempt to read Spillover from the beginning.
