Hello, I’m calling on behalf of people incarcerated at Johnson County who are facing horrendous conditions. The mental and physical torture of segregation needs to stop at this facility. Those in segregation have a much higher chance of being neglected by jail staff ,and most jail deaths at Texas jails have happened in segregation. Deaths happened in Johnson County Jail in 2016, 2020, 2021, and this past Wednesday due almost entirely to medical neglect. Maricela Rueda, who has high blood pressure and is also 33, needs to be moved from segregation to general population immediately. Maricela has been housed in segregation for a month now and has experienced torture, violation, and threats from staff. Are you aware that a woman near where Maricela is housed has been pepper sprayed 5 times this month? (wait for response) Her crime? Refusing to be strip searched. There are also clear signs that this woman has a cognitive disability yet instead of care she meets abuse.

Rowan Gibson and Lucy Fowlkes need to be moved to general population. It is dangerous mentally and legally for them to be housed with defendants that cooperated against them and their codefendants. By housing them with cooperating defendants, JoCo is violating their right to a fair trial. Thank you for all your help, I appreciate you looking into these issues. I will keep calling until everyone has been moved to general population.

8 of the federal defendants who were sentenced to outrageously long terms are ALSO a part of a larger group of defendants fighting state terrorism charges. In total 20 people are still fighting various state charges. 6 defendants' have trial dates set in the next 3 to 6 months. While appealing their unjust federal verdicts and sentences, these 8 defendants will also have to fight their state cases in Johnson County. We still need good state lawyers to fight these cases so continue to donate to the legal fund, host fundraisers, and spread the word about the case. One of the state defendants, Janette Goering, wrote a statement about the sentencing of the federal defendants. Here is her statement:

Ahead of Sentencing, Prairieland Defendants All Moved Back to Johnson County The defendants have been returned to the original hell of their incarceration, forced to endure some of the worst conditions in Texas jails. We will be updating letter writing addresses on the website and will urgently need funds to support commissary and legal needs.
I don’t know what the future holds in terms of our First Amendment right to protest and free speech, but it seems harrowing with the precedent this case has set. But, in the words of Savanna I re-read, “I’m going to continue to fight this.” I will continue to fight this too.
We were both shocked we hadn’t crossed paths before considering our similarities being vegan, animal lovers, avid readers, and nature enthusiasts. Savanna, like all the other defendants, had lives before that were forever changed all because of a night protest. I recall listening to Maricela Rueda and Benjamin Song, which I referred to as Champagne, recite poetry at an open mic at the Apprentice Creative Space in Oak Cliff. I remember hearing a speech by Champagne at a vigil in early 2024 in front of Dallas MEPS in honor of Aaron Bushnell, an U.S. Airman who self-immolated to protest the ongoing genocide in Palestine at the hands of Israel and manufactured consent by the U.S. Each defendant deserves to be humanized instead of being equated to an alleged North Texas “antifa” cell that the Department of Justice wants the public believing is a threat to society.
“Heartbroken doesn’t even begin to describe it, but this isn’t over either and I’m going to continue to fight this.” This is the first sentence Savanna Batten, one of the nine defendants who was convicted in the North Texas “antifa” case for participating in a noise demonstration at the Prairieland Detention Center on July 4, 2025, sent me via the jail messaging system two days after the verdict.

Let’s meet Nathan Baumann. None of the other individuals who went to Prairieland for the July 4 2025 noise demo even knew this guy. He was a complete stranger with questionable views and actions regarding immigrants and ICE as noted in an obscure Facebook post. He later told law enforcement that he drove to Dallas from college station for the no kings protest that day, heard about the Prairieland demo there from a cute girl, and decided to show up to prairieland in hopes of seeing said cute girl again. At trial the government presented hours of video evidence from six different CCTV cameras that record 24/7/365 and Nathan Baumann is the one and only person shown over and over again doing the vandalism. Note: Baumann turned government cooperator after they convinced him he was a terrorist because he “damaged property” and it was “retaliation”.
