Am I correct in guessing that wood is unvarnished? If it is, my suggestion would be to paint it with a coat of black gesso, then use acrylic markers to decorate it with sigils or other symbols. But that's my go-to suggestion for lots of things, lol. Black gesso is my secret weapon.
Can you paint it?
