Consistent unlawful actions taken by federal agents across Lake County, Illinois since September reveal a coordinated criminal conspiracy directed by the Trump administration to punish and terrorize immigrants and political opponents. *We applaud State's Attorney Rinehart for confirming that there are mechanisms for legal accountability when federal agents commit crimes. However, we urge him to not wait until someone is killed. People in his county have already been subject to violence by federal agents, and investigations into these incidents should begin now. Post by Lake County State's Attorney Eric Rinehart: "The civilian deaths in Minneapolis are outrageous, heartbreaking, and preventable. Recently recruited Border Patrol agents are bringing a militarized force to our community that is engaged in racial profiling, that is not trained to de-escalate, that is not deterred by accountability, and that is not connected to the local community in any way...If the unthinkable were to happen here, and there was loss of life due to federal operations, our office would follow the procedures of 55 ILCS 5/3-3013 and 50 ILCS 727/1-1. Under these statutes, the investigation would be led by the Lake County Coroner's Office and local police agencies."

IF THEY TELL YOU... "This is a federal issue" Respectfully, when federal agents violate state criminal law, Massachusetts has both the authority and responsibility to investigate. Other states have already begun investigations into ICE officers for similar conduct. "The AG can't comment" I understand. I'm not asking for a public statement. I'm asking that the Attorney General exercise her authority to investigate criminal conduct occurring in Massachusetts. "We'll pass along your comment" Thank you. Please note that I'm specifically urging the Attorney General to open a formal criminal investigation into these incidents.
