As they grow through childhood they typically require less and less of others, until as adults they will need less from others than they offer. Something happens with increasing wealth, though, that makes the needs of babies look positively modest. It’s not just that, like infants, the one percent need others to buy and prepare their food, or drive them around, or do their laundry. Their needs grow exponentially beyond all that. They need to be protected from the world—with private clubs, personal handlers and high security. They need their own jets. They need mansions to live in. They need mansions to vacation in. They are like enormous, needy babies, sucking at the world with their monstrous demands.
