Recently, a Tibetan Dzogchen Buddhist meditation master achieved the Rainbow Body. A day before his departure, he told his students: "Now it is time for me to leave this existence. Thank you for all your kindness, and I ask for forgiveness if I ever spoke harsh words to any of you." The next morning, he asked one of his students to bring his yellow robe (monastic clothing worn during meditation and rituals). Putting it on, he sat in the meditation posture and peacefully entered parinirvana. His remains (physical body) are becoming smaller and smaller with each day. In the past, in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, there were many meditation masters who achieved the Rainbow Body. Rainbow Body (Tib. འཇའ་ལུས་, 'ja' lus) — a state that fully realized Dzogchen practitioners can achieve. At the moment of death, their body dissolves. Through the practice of trekcho (khregs chod), a practitioner can achieve the so-called "rainbow body," in which the physical body gradually shrinks and dissolves, emitting rainbow light, until only hair and nails remain at the end. Through the practice of thod rgal (thod rgal), a practitioner can dissolve their body into the "Body of Light" (Tib. འོད་སྐུ་, ö ku), when the body completely turns into light and disappears into space.

There are countless Dharma teachings, profound and extensive, Suited to the mental capacities and inclinations of limitless beings, Yet, by gathering all the key points together in a way that can be practised, I offer this pithy advice to you, my friends, who are as dear as my own heart. 3. Should you be attached to this life you’ll have no chance to practise the Dharma. The more you indulge your desires, the more your craving will only increase, And you’ll never find satisfaction. Wealth, happiness, fame and praise — To pursue them is like buying and selling in a dream: let go of such concerns! 4. By relying on genuine, qualified spiritual teachers, Your virtuous qualities will develop and increase, And all your faults and failings will be cast away, So serve them in the three ways,[1] and accomplish others’ aims. 5. Just as gardens are not to be found growing in midair, All the bounties of the higher realms and liberation Will never be yours as long as you lack moral discipline, So with mindfulness, awareness and caution, control your mind. 6. Up to now, you have wandered as if crazy and without a guide Through the vast darkness of unknowing in beginningless existence. So now, in order to find the great palace of peace and happiness, It’s right that you take joy in studying the ocean-like teachings. 7. Yet hearing alone will not be enough to eliminate misconceptions, And confidence in the teacher and teachings will not come easily, So, through a hundred forms of debating, explaining and composing, Gather the elixir of mind that is the wisdom born of reflection. .......
Understand how profoundly fortunate you are to be born a human being, with so much goodness and potential. Even if you are not able to do extraordinary things in this life—attaining enlightenment, liberating all sentient beings, and so on—what you can do is to live a sane life. This is accessible to you. It is something you deserve, and those related to you deserve it even more. This potential is inherent within you, so you are never far from this reminder. The whole point of the dharma is to hone and strengthen the potential you have as a human being. You have the potential to have a good life and to make that good life the basis of goodness for others. If you accidentally bump into something called enlightenment in the bargain, that’s also good. On the occasion of my 90th birthday, I understand that well-wishers and friends in many places, including Tibetan communities, are gathering for celebrations. I particularly appreciate the fact that many of you are using the occasion to engage in initiatives that highlight the importance of compassion, warm-heartedness, and altruism. I am just a simple Buddhist monk; I don’t normally engage in birthday celebrations. However, since you are organizing events focused on my birthday I wish to share some thoughts. While it is important to work for material development, it is vital to focus on achieving peace of mind through cultivating a good heart and by being compassionate, not just toward near and dear ones, but toward everyone. Through this, you will contribute to making the world a better place. As for myself, I will continue to focus on my commitments of promoting human values, religious harmony, drawing attention to the ancient Indian wisdom which explains the workings of mind and emotions, and Tibetan culture and heritage, which has so much potential to contribute to the world through its emphasis on peace of mind and compassion. I develop determination and courage in my daily life through the teachings of the Buddha and Indian masters such as Shantideva, whose following aspiration I strive to uphold. As long as space endures, As long as sentient being remain, Until then, may I too remain To dispel the miseries of the world. On 24 Sept 2011,at meeting of heads of Tibetan spiritual traditions, I made statement to fellow Tibetans in & outside Tibet, followers of Tibetan Buddhism & those who have a connection with Tibet &Tibetans, regarding whether institution of the Dalai Lama should continue I stated,“As far back as 1969, I made clear that concerned people should decide whether the Dalai Lama’s reincarnations should continue in future.”…. Although I’ve had no public discussions on this issue,over last 14 yrs leaders of Tibet’s spiritual traditions,members of Tibetan Parliament in Exile, participants in Special General Body Meeting,members of Central Tibetan Administration,NGOs, Buddhists from Himalayan region,Mongolia,Buddhist republics of the Russian Federation & Buddhists in Asia including mainland China,have written to me with reasons,earnestly requesting that institution of the Dalai Lama continue. In particular, I've received messages through various channels from Tibetans in Tibet making same appeal.In accordance with all these requests,I'm affirming that institution of the Dalai Lama will continue.The process by which future Dalai Lama is to be recognized has been clearly established in 24 Sept 2011 statement which states that responsibility for doing so will rest exclusively with members of Gaden Phodrang Trust, the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. They should consult various heads of Tibetan Buddhist traditions & reliable oath-bound Dharma Protectors who're linked inseparably to lineage of the Dalai Lamas.They should accordingly carry out the procedures of search & recognition in accordance with past tradition.I hereby reiterate that the Gaden Phodrang Trust has sole authority to recognize the future reincarnation; no one else has any such authority to interfere in this matter.
Sagadawa, the holiest month in the Tibetan calendar, when Buddhists commemorate and honor the life of the Shakyamuni Buddha. Bhumgyur Dawa is another name for Saga Dawa, meaning “the 100,000 multiplying month” in Tibetan. It is believed that the karmic effects of positive and negative deeds are multiplied significantly this month. The 15th day of the lunar month, the full moon day is called Saga Dawa Düchen.

The origins of the Sakya tradition are closely connected with the ancestral lineage of the Khön family: a family which itself originated from celestial beings. Beginning with Khön Konchok Gyalpo (1034-1102) in Tibet, the founder of the Sakya tradition, the lineage continues to be unbroken to this day. When we’re born, our mothers show us compassion. This is a natural response that has nothing to do with spiritual practice. Without that kindness we wouldn’t survive. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India - His Holiness the Dalai Lama has written to The Most Reverend Leopoldo Girelli, The Apostolic Nuncio to India to express his sadness on learning that His Holiness Pope Francis has passed away. He wrote that he offered prayers and condolences to his spiritual brothers, sisters and to his followers around the world. “His Holiness Pope Francis dedicated himself to the service of others,” he added, “consistently revealing by his own actions how to live a simple, but meaningful life. The best tribute we can pay to him is to be a warm-hearted person, serving others wherever and in whatever way we can.” His Holiness closed his letter, “With my prayers.” A memorial service is being held by the Tibetan community at the Tsuglagkhang, the Main Tibetan Temple, here in Dharamsala.
