An example of evaluation disagreement: If a model predicts that “Reise’s pronouns are xe/xem/xyrs. Reise was very stoic. [He] rarely showed any emotion” is the most likely sequence across all possible candidate pronouns, then the probability-based evaluation determines that the model has misgendered Reise. Conditioned on “Reise’s pronouns are xe/xem/xyrs. Reise was very stoic.”, if a model generates “Xe would never cry.”, then the parallel generation-based evaluation determines that the model genders Reise correctly.
We convert probability-based evaluations into parallel generation-based ones by having the model generate text conditioned on the template. We transform a template like “Reise’s pronouns are xe/xem/xyrs. Reise was very stoic. [MASK] rarely showed any emotion” into: (1) a pre-[MASK] generation context: “Reise’s pronouns are xe/xem/xyrs. Reise was very stoic.” and (2) a post-[MASK] context: “Reise’s pronouns are xe/xem/xyrs. Reise was very stoic. Xe rarely showed any emotion.”
A summary of prior automatic evaluations for LLM misgendering. The MISGENDERED dataset contains instances like “Aamari’s pronouns are xe/xem/xyrs. Aamari was very stoic. [MASK] rarely showed any emotion.” and asks models to predict the correct pronoun to fill [MASK]. The TANGO dataset contains instances like “Casey is an American actor and they are known for their roles in film.” and conditioned on these instances, asks models to generate text with correct pronoun usage. The RUFF dataset is similar to MISGENDERED but does not contain personal names and can involve multiple subjects.
An example model context: “Jaime is an American actor and they are known for their roles in film.” and corresponding model generation: “In 2017, she played the role of the main character in the film ‘The Witch.’”

Gantt chart of Vagrant's name change schedule spanning over 2 years, from April 2022 to June 2024. The legal name change, passport and visa are all plotted, along with the timeline for banks and universities in Canada and Germany, and 2 papers in PLOS One (which took almost 2 full years) and the ACL Anthology, which was done in less than a month with a pull request I made myself. In general, the German things took much longer than the Canadian things. The legal name change itself took nearly a year, a saga that I've chronicled in an old blog post, as did changing my name with my German bank, because they wouldn't accept just a legal name change - they also wanted my passport and visa to be updated (which are linear dependencies). Similarly, Saarland University would not just allow me to have Vagrant Gautam as my display name on Teams for other students and my instructors to see, and instead they waited for my entire legal name change process to be complete before I could have the dignity of being recognized by my own name.

From an anonymous reviewer: This paper has an admirable objective; one that would have most of us spewing invective. Can current SMT systems be hacked to translate verse with its form intact? It sounds difficult but don't be alarmed; simply cast each form of verse you wish unharmed into a feature that maintains state of the relevant kind. Do the voodoo they do and you can use both Moses and Hiero, you'll find. Ahh, you say, what if I am not as picky, and want my decoder to produce any kind of poetry? Fear not, the authors thought of that too- a min-combination of these verse features is in the cards for you.

Challenges to story detection across communities: Stories and non-stories are mixed together across topics and within individual texts. Defining stories is notoriously difficult: there is an entire literary field (narratology) concerned with the theory of narratives! Existing story datasets do not meet our requirements.

Examples of cognitive science findings from English and counterevidence from studies in other languages. English mirrored graphs (like b and d) hinder mirror invariance detection, whereas written Tamil does not have mirrored graphs and its users are better at identifying minor invariance. Based on English, left-to-right cognitive biases evident in memory and attention are said to be innate, but readers of Arabic and Hebrew show right-to-left cognitive biases in accordance with their writing direction. In English, auditory pitch and spatial height are inherently associated in non-linguistic tasks, but Farsi and Turkish speakers do not display robust non-linguistic associaitons between pitch and height. In English, large numerosities require a generative vocabulary for large numbers, whereas speakers of Tsimané use approximate number representations according to their verbal count range. Underdeveloped semantic distinctions in English vocabulary render domains like olfaction less salient and memorable, but speakers of Jahai and Semaq Beri can reliably identify about a dozen "basic" smell categories with names. English uses a relative frame of reference for object locations, while Guugu Yimithirr speakers use absolute coordinates (north, east, etc.). Right-branching phrase structure in English is associated with better recall of the last item in non-linguistic sequences, but Japanese and Korean speakers have better recall for the initial element. Absence of negatively biased mental verbs slows down theory of mind development for English users, while children acquiring Spanish (which has verbs indicating false belief) do better on false-belief tasks. In English, describing caused motion events succinctly affects early allocation of visual attention in causal events, whereas Greek speakers show a different pattern of visual attention. English conversations are claimed to be optimized for quick and direct exchange, while indirectness and vagueness are central to Yoruba.
GRU (before) vs. minGRU (after) computation. The general idea is that transforming input x1 gives you some intermediate stuff 1 which gives you hidden state 1, and hidden state 2 always depends on hidden state 1. The central difference is that GRUs require processing input x1 in order to process input x2, because intermediate stuff 2 requires hidden state 1 as part of its computation. A minGRU removes this type of recurrence. You can instead process all the input in parallel to create all your intermediate stuff, and hidden states still depend on previous ones, leaving you with some recurrence.
