An oil painting by EA Hornel entitles the Brownie of Blednoch. It depicts a supernatural creature in a wild landscape, surounded by sheep. The scene is lit by a full moon. The brownie is humanoid, with very long, thin limbs; a shaggy coat and glowing white eyes. It has a beak of sorts and pointed ears.

A painting by Joan Eardley entitled "Salmon Nets and the Sea". It shows an impressionistic, almost abstract view of nets hanging out to dry on the shore from posts while a rough grey sea breaks on the shore. The sky is a deep petroleum blue and the sand a rust red. There is a sense of the force of the sea breaking on the shore.

Even more striking though, is the window blind which is a luminous orange, surrounded by the darkness of the walls around it.

The ex-church in Glasgow on Great Western Road has become a pub, thetre and events space. When it reopened, Alasdair Gray was comissioned to produce art for several areas, including the old nave ceiling. A massive mural covering the whole of the ceiling is shown (in part) here. A dark blue represents the heavens with various motifs of Gray's work and stories from the bible depcited on this ground in vivid colours. A mix of the astronomical, astrological and religious.

Bruegel's the (Little) Tower of Babel - known as little because of the size of the image and it being smaller than another picture of the same subject by the artist. The picture is a watercolour painting of a huge building that is formed of many levels spiralling up above the clouds. It sits on a coastline, dwarfing the ships and workers. The top of the buidling is still under construction and seems reddish in the light when compared to the lower levels.

Two unfortunately unconvincing CGI cats cling to a cowboy-booted woman's legs, clearly intent on biting her. The image comes from the Swedish film Let The Right One In, which is otherwise excellent.

His hair is a greasy brown mop. In isolation he started cooking and came up with a fast food pasta creation known as "Piccolini Cuscino". It sounds appalling. Here's an excerpt from the interview with GQ where he tried to recreate it:

He puts the aluminum sphere, the little pillow, into what he thinks is an oven and I think is a microwave. He attempts to turn it on. “I actually knew how to do this before,” he tells me. “I literally did this yesterday. And now it’s just impossible. It’s going to look like I can’t cook at all.”

Eartha Kitt drinks from a bottle of honey whilst wearing an embroidered cocktail dress. Eartha, despite being born on a plantation, was a hugely talented singer and actress with a career of over 60 years. She appeared in Orson Wells' plays; taught her friend James dean ballet; was nominated for Grammy and Tony awards and won daytime Emmy awards. She was an activist for LGBT+ rights and famously criticised the Vietnam war whilst at the White House. The CIA branded Eartha ‘a sadistic nymphomaniac’.

Scorpius from Frascape, clad much like a burns victim in leather fetish wear. Fun fact, Wayne Pygram, the actor who portrayed Scorpius played Grand Moff Tarkin in one of the prequel movies.

The Setas de Sevilla - a massive wooden sculpture in Seville, Spain designed to resemble mushrooms. They have a lattice-like shape and a warm colour from the material used. They stand on a pedestrian square in warm sunshine.

When I was a kid, I collected one of those educational part-works about human culture and technology and art and EVERYTHING and after the first few issues, it was more about collecting than actually doing anything with the activities inside. If I maybe had a personal crisis, went back to my mother's house and looked the magazines out, I could probably create something like this. Just lying on the floor, sobbing uncontrollably whilst I glued together: a longship prow and a shaker table; a mosaic floor cheek by jowl to some decoupaged-to-hell 50's units; a truly awful faux-fresco ceiling bordered by vegetables(?) and literally everything else clashing with everything else. Gauche is too mild a word. Kitsch is far, far, too polite. Uber-rococo? Too academic. Let's just say this is the work of a magpie - a toweringly monstrous magpie of motley and glitter and shells and tape and sequins and craft paints and stripped pine. A colossus of tat.
