She deals in simple communication, the receipt and delivery of commands, statements with well-defined purpose, and anything that blurs those stark lines or introduces unnecessary emotion only interferes with her ability to keep herself centered within them. He may think he's helping her when he makes these overtures of concern, but it's only increasing her uncertainty, and she resents the loss of any of her remaining self-confidence.

She hopes that acknowledging it will let them move on from whatever it is that has brought on this reaction. "I mean it." She isn't sure what to say to that, so she continues to walk. After a few steps, she realizes he is no longer in pace with her, and she turns to look at him. She regrets it, because the look on his face is something she was not prepared for. Something honed and sharp is in there, and it seizes her gaze, preventing her from looking away from his face. "I mean it," he repeats, his eyes holding her still. "I gave my word that you would be safe with me." He says the words with a gravity far beyond their surface meaning. She doesn't understand what it is that lurks beneath that surface, but this glimpse is more than she wants to know.
