We read your paper in my lab group yesterday and that is a mix of folks doing more basic and more applied research - I feel the paper resonated with all of them but for those doing the applied work it gave them language and consequently agency for understanding, communicating, and defending the approaches they are taking. I got the same reaction from the staff scientist working on agricultural questions in the applied program of which I am a part. Genuinely, and I know I sound almost American in this feedback (!), your historical work has given words and a framework for understanding why what they’ve been doing has been so hard to get across (given the mainstream focus on the Fisher way of doing things). I think going forward it will also help them argue much more effectively for why we also need the Gosset-Yule-numerous others approach that you elaborate on. I look forward to exploring your work further and all the links you provided. On a positive, I do think the approaches we’re adopting and putting into practice are beginning to be recognized as needed. Understanding the history better is only going to help us begin to “take the science back 100 years”, as I keep telling people is my goal!
