Conceived of at least as early as 1880,[1] the term was used in 1881 by the economist Francis Ysidro Edgeworth to describe "an ideally perfect instrument, a psychophysical machine, continually registering the height of pleasure experienced by an individual."[2]

Newport: I’m very sympathetic. I see a divide in terms of AI’s application to areas exempt from humanistic critique and areas that have real humanistic implications. When AI automates tasks that are repetitive or time-consuming or that you would be willing to hand off to a research assistant, I’m not so concerned. If a political scientist can use an AI coding agent to do a more comprehensive and faster data analysis to help them form an argument, that’s good.

How much you need in order to be rich depends on how much you yourself believe you need in order to be rich. Confusing? If your best friend is a Silicon Valley multimillionaire or your next-door neighbor made it big trading Nvidia or Palantir you might suddenly be nursing a grudge that your Ph.D. only got you as far as the lower middle class.
