Dnote sends weekly mailshots covering much of the best of art and art venues on the island of Ireland. Run by Peter FitzGerald, artist, who is currently doing a PhD in the Media & Entertainment Lab at University College Dublin; former lots of things.

Fergus Martin: Formal and Wild Landscapes | Thursday 14 May – Saturday 4 July 2026 | The LAB | Fergus Martin: photo of an installation shot of the artist’s work; we see large, shiny, reflective, smooth, double-bale-size cylinders, at least six, situated in a field where some grain is growing; possibly at dusk, because long shadows on the brown wheat or oats orCurated by Dr. Margarita Cappock ‘Formal and Wild Landscapes’ by Fergus Martin can be described as an exhibition of illusions and dreams. It incorporates sculpture, animation, photographic prints and sound projections that connect at an emotional and subliminal level. Every aspect of the exhibition, from its commencement in the cube space to the culmination in the upper gallery, provides the viewer with an invisible kinetic experience as the art works ‘ping’ against each other and relate sequentially to what the viewer will encounter next. Dick Richards: Red Door Reverie, 31 x 31cm | Anseo / Elsewhere: Cork County and City Artists Summer Showcase | Thursday 2 July – Saturday 19 September 2026 | Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre | Dick Richards: Red Door Reverie, 31 x 31cm | this appears to be a mix of painting and collage, thematically referencing, probably, black-and-white films, possibly with an emphasis on those depicting rural Ireland; top lef we see a couple kissing, bare arms around shoulders, a left hand clawlike as it grasps the hat on the other figure; the centre area of the image is mostly painted: a red door, a small window, a possibly whitewashed wall; from the top middle a crowd scene curves over to the right and down that side; a baby in arms is the most distinguishable

The sources of the paintings include references to ancient geological maps, the edges of seascapes exposing the layers of the Anthropocene and human displacement. An engagement with realms of deep time informs the imagery, transforming the invisible and the imagined into a resonant visual language. McDonald’s paintings combine intense sequences of oil paint with natural materials such as iron-rich oxides, cinnabar, malachite and plaster, producing works charged with movement, sound, and rhythm. Samir Mahmood: States, Stations | Wednesday 1 July – Sunday 30 August 2026 | Luan Gallery | surprisingly difficult image to describe; it’s significantly taller than wide; the background is an acid yellow-green; centred on it is a presumably photographic image, but it is sort-of kaleidoscopic; runing from top to bottom of this central image is what looks like white-painted wrought-iron filigree with flower shapes but also something that looks quite like an ice-hockey goalie’s faceguard; top and bottom sort-of reflect each other, but not in a reliable manner; there is also a sort-of mirroring of left and right, but these are smaller vaguely hamburger-like shapes; the mid-area of this image is a textured yellow with a hint of eyes; the images outline glows a shadowed, staturated blue
