Marley, who had already ascended to a kind of godlike neutrality, had stepped in to try and alleviate the mood with the Smile Jamaica Concert shortly before the country’s elections in December 1976, only to be shot during a home invasion two days before the show. He played anyway. What you hear on Exodus, then, is the tension between the hope that everything will be all right and the creeping worry that it won’t. Marley recorded the album during a self-imposed exile in London, a distance that cast his optimism about Jamaica in a cautious light. And while his politics had never been of more public interest, the album’s most uplifting songs turned inward toward matters personal, romantic, and spiritual: “Three Little Birds,” the lovelorn “Waiting in Vain,” the legacy-defining “One Love.” The overall feeling is one of victory through détente, of private peace as a foil for public rancor. As for the band, they remained borderline-peerless, not only in the province of reggae, but in funk, soul, and whatever Venn diagram you could make of the three. (No group of musicians has ever sounded so precise while being in so little of a hurry.) And while Marley’s populism rippled through punk, the members of the Wailers maintained their own simmering intensity—abstractly on “Natural Mystic” and “Jamming,” and directly on “Punky Reggae Party,” on which Marley finds his inner hardcore kid a few years before the term was invented: “Rejected by society/Treated with impunity/Protected by my dignity/I search for reality.…

Unlike a list, starter packs have a ‘follow all’ button. It’s a feature I wish didn’t exist. Imagine 100 peeps a day following you who haven’t vetted anyone on the list. This is the follow all mentality that I strenuously avoided on X. I prefer to vet every follow as time allows. Being put on a starter pack has made me waste many hours of my day vetting accounts I would have never followed in the first place. (I have a slightly different approach when it comes to NAFO fellas) Of course, you can decide to not hit that button, go through the list, vet those that interest you, and have a safer experience for it. There is a growing database of these starter packs, I’ll share the link in the replies. Let me share a little more about how I do social media. I don’t follow large accounts that will never follow back, unless they follow me first that is. If I want to follow their posts, I put them on a list, like the one I have for Ukraine news. This is like making your own algorithms. I spend an hour perusing my Ukraine list during the peak period of the day for Ukrainian news outlets and indie journalists. You can certainly make your own tailored lists. Create the list, then go through the starter pack of your interest, click on the three dots (upper right corner of bio page) and add them to your list. I’m the grandson of Mexican immigrants, but that history is special in itself. I probably wouldn’t exist if my ggg-granddaddy hadn’t fallen in love with Mexico. So much in love that he chose to return after being deported and having his first marriage annulled by the Mexican government during the tumultuous times of the early/mid 1800’s. Hugh (Don Julio) Laing married again upon his return to Mexico to raise another family in calmer times. Two generations later, this branch of my family would migrate back to Texas to work hard in the fields of America and to regain the US citizenship that was, by definition, already theirs. Despite the fact that my ancestral line dates back to the colonial times of the 1600’s in America, my heart also belongs to Mexico. It is the culture of my parents and their forebears and even though I don’t speak the language, I was raised on all the wonderful things that they brought back with them to this country. The celebration of family, of food and drink, of their religious faith that held a family together in hard times. All of this, and the lessons I have learned about the history of America, both good and evil, have shaped my attitude and my opinions on immigration and America’s place on the world stage. We’re not perfect, here in America, but it’s still a beacon to the impoverished and the abandoned people of the world who still see it as an opportunity like no other they’ve ever seen in their own part of the world. And it is and always should be our best road to a better nation. I trust Vice President Harris will find a solution to the crisis at our southern borders that we can all agree on.
