I was always ambivalent on the trill. It did achieve what Dent describes, but it also made Doc seem weird, in a way. I kinda give it a pass when I reread Doc stories. I never wavered on Chemistry and Habeas Corpus, however. Even as a kid I thought they were stupid and distracting.
