A poem called Envoi In Chalk by Emily Cullen I'm calling my son from the end of the estate when my eye snags on green pastel words. He has chalked on the pavement: The world is great This is just the line I need to read, my mother in hospital, my shoulder inflamed, future employment uncertain, Earth eyeballing Armageddon. Yet how right, his perception. He bolts up on his yellow scooter, eight-year old fringe quiffed with gel, on the cusp of the age of cool.
The text of a poem by Dom Conlon called The Wild Agreement which reads: I, the undersigned, understand that by living in this wild land I may become completely stuck within the pages of this book where nothing's locked inside a cage where danger leaps from off the page where wild is a fact of life and words are sharpened like a knife where broken hearts and paper cuts and tickled ribs and startled tuts and endless dreams and fractured time are not preceded by a sign so l agree that if I drift I could change and slowly shift into a different type of me a me who is entirely free. The poem has an illustration by Korky Paul which shows a man in a tall hat signing a piece of paper with a huge pen.

While most of the prisoners had been forced onto a death march, about 7,000 had been left behind. Auschwitz was both a concentration and extermination camp, and it is estimated that around 1.1 million people died there, including around 1 million Jews, 70,000 Poles, and 21,000 Roma and Sinti people. The Holocaust was made possible by the collaboration of international corporations with the Nazis. These companies include IBM, who enabled the identification of targets and the administration of the camps, Deutsche Bank, who financed the construction of Auschwitz, Ford, ExxonMobil, Zeiss, and Siemens who used slave labour in the camps, ITT who enabled Nazi communications and built bombs, Chase Bank who facilitated financing, General Motors who made military aircraft, Coca-Cola who sponsored Nazi events, IG Farben, who manufactured Zyklon B used in the gas chambers, and many others. January 27 is now recognised internationally as the date of International Holocaust Remembrance Day (aka: International Day in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust).
