A codec is the means by which audio and video files are compressed (or encoded) for storage and transmission purposes. Codecs are necessary for playback of digital video and audio files, since they compress (encode) and decompress (decode) the moving image and sound files and allow them to be rendered. Supporting professional development. Since 2020, DPOE-N has provided over $93,000 in financial support for cultural heritage professionals to pursue the SAA’s Digital Archives Specialist certificate. See the map.
3-2-1 backup strategy. The 3-2-1 backup rule is a best practice in digital preservation. It recommends to maintain 3 copies of your data (the original plus at least 2 copies); use 2 distinct forms of media for storage; keep 1 copy in a geographically separate location.
