Many ascribe the quote, ''When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty,'' to Thomas Jefferson. The quote means that when the government oversteps its authority and becomes tyrannical, then the governed have a responsibility to overthrow that government to reestablish the rights of the people to be free and only be governed by consent. This quote cannot be attributed to Jefferson; however, the idea can be found in Jefferson's words in the Declaration of Independence, in which he states of citizens living under a tyrannical government that ''it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government.''
