AI contributions have the added pain of being demoralizing. Opinions on Generative AI Hit a New Low; Over Half of Game Industry Professionals Think it’s Bad for the Industry According to this year’s survey, over half (52%) of game industry professionals think generative AI is having a negative impact on the game industry, up from 30% last year and 18% the year prior. Workers in visual and technical art (64%), game design and narrative (63%), and game programming (59%) hold the most unfavorable views. About 7% of respondents think generative AI is having a positive impact on the game industry, down from 13% in GDC’s 2025 report. That amount is higher for executives, and those in business operations and services (19% each).

My memories of childhood and adolescence contain enough that I recognize in a game like Mixtape that the nostalgia factor does indeed kick in for me, despite the material reality of that period still being different enough to matter. And yet it is not enough for me to respond to that feeling of nostalgia, to give into its call. It is worth examining why an Australian rocker whose music career started in 2007 has decided to make games set in Colorado and California in the 90s, with soundtracks almost exclusively based in the 60s, 70s and 80s British and American rock eras. It is worth examining why so many video games are set in the Pacific Northwest, why so many game narratives take on the shape of an edgy 80s or 90s teen comedy or steep themselves in the signifiers of suburbia so heavily. What would it mean for a game like this to be set in Queens in 1993, or Mexico City in 2015, or Mumbai in 2000, or Melbourne in 2008?

I often write about questions of who controls a company, but I will say that the answer to the question “who controls a website” is pretty much the person with the password to change the website. But as I wrote in my CGM feature earlier this week, fulfilling this wearable vision is often harder than it seems and can come at a high personal cost. And this wearable promise is starting to shift. Over the last year or so, I’ve noticed a new cycle emerging. Tell people using wearables will help them take control of their health. To do that more effectively, collect even more specific and specialized data. To make sense of this massive amount of data, inject AI into the process. To justify adding AI, hop on wellness trends and frame this as a more personalized way to take control of their health. From there, the hype cycle evolves. To reinforce the previous feature cycle, reemphasize that wearable tech will not only help people take control of their health, it will help them live longer. To do that effectively, introduce new scores that predict lifespan and aging. To make sense of new scores, update AI bots to dispense generic health advice as a resource. To justify adding AI, remind them that this personalized experience holds the key to living a longer, healthier life. Rinse and repeat with a new wellness trend.

State lawmakers in Massachusetts have proposed more specific legislation to ban facial recognition from being used by grocery stores to profile customers and set their prices, though their bill has been stalled since last May. In Congress, the Stop Price Gouging in Grocery Stores Act introduced last August by Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and House Progressive Caucus Chair Rep. Greg Casar (D-Texas) includes a ban on stores using biometrics to set prices for customers without clear opt-in consent.
