Due to the unprecedented two-vote margin of victory in the mayoral runoff, a petition for a recount is likely to occur for that office. Once such a petition is filed, the law requires a recount board to be appointed to conduct the recount process as expeditiously as reasonably possible until completed. The recount board would consist of one person chosen by each candidate then a third member would be chosen by mutual agreement of both candidates. Once the recount board has completed their work, they will submit a certification of their recount result to the official canvass board. If the results of the election change, then a new certificate of election would be issued to the mayoral candidate who is declared the winner. By law, Mayor Paul TenHaken will continue serving as mayor until a successor has been duly elected and taken office.

Chapters alternate between the two time periods. The story was enjoyable, but every time I came to a chapter set in 2020, I asked myself, "when is the author going to say something about Covid-19?" The answer is -- never. I found that very disturbing and distracting. On the surface, the term makes sense: It may be impossible to meet both people's needs in the exact same space. But my issue with the term is that "competing" implies a winner and a loser, the idea that someone is right, and someone else is wrong. With the example above, this can play out as telling the person who is fidgeting that they need to be still, or telling the sensory sensitive person that they need to "just ignore it." But there are ways to meet both people's needs! Maybe these two simply do not sit near each other when they both need to focus, or they work in separate spaces. This is why I have moved to the term "opposite needs" to emphasize the challenge of helping everyone co-exist rather than framing it as a fight where someone has to win.
