Mecklenburg County announced a new summer series on Friday nights to help address the issue. Teen Summer James takes place from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. every Friday in July at the Eastway Regional Recreation Center and will feature music and basketball games. The space-limited events are open to anyone between 13 and 18 years old and require registration. The July 17 event is already full. Quoted text: Pete Etchells, a professor of psychology and science communication at Bath Spa University, also pushed back on the idea that Common Core is the primary cause of mental-health problems among American kids. “This is a common trap that we fall into when trying to figure out what’s going on with those declines,” he told me. “We try to answer the question of ‘What one big thing can explain this?’ The answer, in my view, is that there isn’t one big thing.” This was generally the thesis of Etchells’s own book Unlocked: The Real Science of Screen Time (And How to Spend It Better), which came out the week before The Anxious Generation did, sold only a few thousand copies, and received hardly any attention at all.

Two sheets of curling ice. On the left, Sheet A is set up such that red rocks are exposed and vulnerable to removal. If a yellow rock makes contact with the topmost red, it can move toward the centre of the house and hit the other red rock. With enough force, both of them will move out of play. On the right, Sheet B is set up such that red rocks are in parallel alignment. It is not possible to remove both of these stones with one rock so this is a preferable position for team red. At best, yellow can remove one red rock and then roll under cover on the centre line or possibly roll outwards to be guarded by the yellow stone that's in front of the house.

Any of the first five rocks of an end sitting in the FGZ cannot be removed from play (but they CAN be "promoted" into the house). The exception is that any FGZ rocks touching the centre line CANNOT be moved off of that centre line (the "no tick" rule). This rule emerged because curlers got very good at gently nudging rocks just a little bit out of the way. To increase the challenge and encourage interesting games, teams have to navigate around all of these rocks for at least the first part of an end before they're allowed to start moving or removing rocks.

Four rocks remain in play when it's time to score. Two yellow clearly count, but the outermost yellow and red stones aren't differentiable by eye. The Chinese team calls for a measure.

Curling is traditionally a self-policing sport and this finger-graze thing is upsetting because (a) if it’s contact, it’s unintentional and (b) there is no strategic advantage to doing it. If anything you’re likely to disturb your own rock for the worse.
