Chapter 6 is a shorter, straightforward chapter that focuses on one aspect of the story. Because of that, many things are still not touched on here – in fact, it may surprise you what was missing! But one thing will be clarified, whether you’re ready or not.
He always said he liked the numbers 99 and 999. He said he couldn’t imagine a number any more grand than them. It was infuriating. He couldn’t have two favorite numbers. He could only have one. The rule, was just one. 9 feels half-hearted. It feels full, full of everything you could imagine. But 9 is just a single number. It can only represent 9 things. Just one, small push, and it’s nothing. For as big as it wants to be, it can only be one. So, whenever I see him, I think of the number 9. I think of the number 99, and 999. And when I see the cut across his chest, splayed in half, I think to tell him, it really could only have ended in one. ... “Flowers are useless.” ...Idiot. You couldn’t even make me hate you.

The girl was behind the bookshelf. “Good Mourning.” The voice was stilted, limping from behind the bookshelf, seeping through the gaps between the books as if it was not meant to escape. It sounded frail, like a wavering pen. Cecilia stepped back. “I hope I have found You well. Though, it seems, you have found Me, well.” There was the sound of a footstep, but nothing indicated there was any movement, not even the air. “Am I well? Have you ever been in a well? It seems many children are Participating, in these reckless endeavors.” She breathed out between words, even where it made no sense to. “Though, I do condone this roughhousing. After all, a little Joyousess is much needed in these times, is it not?” Her voice itself seemed to tilt, as if the question was more than rhetoric. Cecilia opened her mouth, and a response flowed from it. The ease of her answer scared her. “ I’m Glad. You, of many people, would agree with this sentiment. Your work experience has been a great boon, in understanding the importance of Wells.” Cecilia opened her mouth again, on instinct. The words spilled before she could recognize a question was before her at all. The girl behind the bookshelf hummed in agreement, before pausing, and then starting to hum a simple melody. The tune pushed through the pages, in a way that made the shelf breathe her staggered breaths in tandem.

“Love the bandages. Kinda hot.” Gigi was hastily realizing that her strategy of saying the first thing that came to mind was not only being matched, but completely exceeded with this girl. She wondered if there was a filter in there at all. At least she had some filter, as useless as it was. She decided to scrap the filter. “Love the no shoes. Kinda hot.”

Penny yelped, and the cone slipped right out of her hand and onto the wood behind them, in an almost cartoonish fashion. “Oop-” Palette scooped up the cone with one hand before it could splatter. “Don’t drop my work, now.” Penny slumped over in relief as he handed it to her. “Oh, thank god.” “Thank you for the five dollars.” Palette slipped onto one of the dock supports, arms crossed. “How did that happen, anyway? Quill tilted her head towards Penny. “She’s really tickilish.” “And that, somehow, made her fling a cone of ice cream three meters.” “She’s really ticklish.” He chuckled. Quill and Penny were some of his regulars, but usually they were good at not dropping their cones like they were six. Then again, he knew Quill was fully willing to scoop up the mess by hand, and Penny was even more willing to lick her palm dry, so, maybe he didn’t need to catch it.

“Don’t.” There was a lot in her voice. She just laughed it off. “We keep doing this thing to each other. It’s so stupid.” She kept laughing. “This is all so stupid. We’re all idiots.”
Her skin almost felt irritated. She could tell Kronii was feeling it too, with a hand rubbing her shoulder every few minutes. “Are you feeling alright?” Fauna moved in front of her. “This isn’t on camera. I cut out stuff anyway, so...” Kronii chuckled, almost offended at the idea that she’d care for the camera that much. “I’m good. I swear there’s something with my skin, but I’ve checked, and-” “-and nothing, right?” Fauna rubbed her scalp. “I feel it too. My head’s pounding, I think, but every time I notice it, it’s gone.” Kronii sighed. “Fantastic. Well, no choice but to keep moving. Hope you know where we’re going.” “It’s just straight forward. The forest isn’t big on the map,” Fauna recalled. “Doesn’t look straight.” Kronii glanced behind them, finding nothing. “Neither do you,” Fauna jabbed at her, earning a punch in her shoulder.
