There's a scene in Zardoz where Friend is sitting in one of the Vortex's storage rooms full of art and artifacts from human history. He's asking Tabernacle to analyze historical car designs for him. He's frustrated with the result, but he doesn't do anything about it. He doesn't find a way to study cars himself; he isn't tinkering or repairing; he doesn't even interact with the archive directly. He doesn't even seem interested. He's just passing the time by having the machine that governs their lives do his thinking for him.
