Where have you been today?' 'Sitting in the Searchers' office.' 'What were you doing there, girl?' 'We sat there and spoke to May.' Four sixteen-year-old girls talking to a man and wife all day no wonder our parents asked questions. But it was worth all those hours and all those conversations because we were the first to hear about opportunities - like the morning in early December when Bill Harry said, 'By the way, girls, there's a fella coming this week doing auditions for the Star-Club in Hamburg.' We gasped, realising this was our chance. An agent called Henry Henroid was running auditions in the Rialto, an old 1920s cinema in Toxteth. We went along the following Saturday, bringing our own guitars and drum kit. A lot of bands at the audition still had day jobs, but because we had given up work to focus on music we knew we had the edge. We were on at three in the afternoon, the last ones to audition that day, and we played six songs, keen to impress Henroid. Everybody assumed that because of his surname he was German, but it was his real name and he was a Londoner with the strongest Cockney accent you could imagine. After we finished the audition Henroid said, 'Well, girls, I'm sure Manfred will like you.' Exuding a gentlemanly charisma, Henroid was part of the gen-eration who helped to promote rock 'n' roll in Britain.

The Return of the Return of the Durutti Column 1997 is a screenprint on white wove paper that features an image of two men on horseback in starkly contrasting tones of black and green ink. The men are depicted frontally wearing cowboy hats and staring into the distance. Cartoon-like speech bubbles drawn onto the image outline a short conversation between them. The figure on the right asks, ‘What’s your scene, man?’ to which the figure on the left replies: ‘Reification’. The man on the right continues, ‘Yeah? I guess that means pretty hard work with big books and piles of paper on a big table’, and his counterpart responds: ‘Nope. I drift. Mostly I just drift’. The comic was originally produced by the avant-garde group known as the Situationists – members of which often emphasised the value of the ‘drift’ or unplanned journey mentioned by one of the men on horseback in this work – but Wyn Evans found the image in a 1966 reproduction of the comic published by students in Strasbourg, France (see Richard Wolin, The Wind from the East: French Intellectuals, the Cultural Revolution, and the Legacy of the 1960s, Princeton 2010, p.76). The Durruti Column was a military unit of around six thousand anarchists led by the Spanish revolutionary José Buenaventura Durrutti that fought against General Franco in the Spanish Civil War (1936–39).

The Rialto was a landmark building, it had a history, not all of it good, racism recurring. An Amnesty International benefit gig, as featured in the book, took place at Eric's on 3rd May 1979, and I was there. The groups playing that night were Joy Division, Fireplace and Passage. A Manchester collection.

Drifting ft Pascale Martini - Song Of The Twilight Zone https://hearthis.at/11269230/ I'm at home looking through a stack of old gig posters when I spot the poster for the cancelled Prague ‘We Vote’ gig from 30 years before. Was it 30 years to the day? Let's say it was, what are the chances! As I'm wondering what ever became of Pascale I remember myself, as I sometimes have to, that the internet exists. One search later we're back in touch and from her home in Zurich Pascale is asking if I'm still doing music? I send her a couple of tracks I'm currently working on, one is an instrumental I'm calling ‘Folk Song of the Twilight Zone’. To my surprise Pascale sends the track back with added singing, now you're talking. After a bit of back and forth online we end up with 'Song of the Twilight Zone', the first in a series of songs they're calling ‘Drifting ft...’ As time goes on I've been able to call on various authors and singers to guest on Drifting ft... tracks.
