good reads review: I'm not going to rate by stars because bottom line I thought this book was Fine™. Fun even. But the whole time I was listening to it I couldn't stop thinking "this is what everyone was on about??". It's not _bad_ but it felt like a series of sci fi tropes thrown together; a book where the events happening are far more interesting than any of the characters or their reactions. In a way it felt like a book designed to make you feel smart. The protagonist works his way through problems by knowing things like what countries still use imperial units or how to write scripts in Excel and you think "Hey, I know that!" and it's a great way to build a sense of empathy. The problem is it never goes much further than that. It's this super compelling scenario as narrated by a guy who has read a LOT of wikipedia articles and would love to tell you about them at a party. And the thing is, I'm EXACTLY that guy so I'm not hating, but I also don't think I'd make an interesting protagonist. Maybe the everyman angle is more interesting to some, but it just lacked depth to me. It's funny because in parallel I read To Be Taught, If Fortunate by Becky Chambers which covers a lot of the same ground as this book thematically, but as told by people with more to say about their feelings than their thoughts. And it does it while still exploring really interesting scientific ideas. Anyway, my biggest Actual Complaint is if you're going to have a story about The Guy Who Lives (Forever War, Old Man's War, Etc) they either have to be special or they have to be lucky but they can't be both. (That's the most I'll say without getting spoilery). But that aside, if you like the Bobiverse books you'll probably love these.
