This image shows the content page of the last issue of The Maghreb Review, Vol. 50, No 4 (2025). It shows articles by several different people, amongst them, the fourth from the top: Nina Salouâ Studer: "Female Agents of Colonialism: Women Doctors in Algeria at the Turn of the Century".

Picture is a photograph of a book on a black background. It shows a scene in the mountains, where people put a gigantic plaster on a melting glacier. Around the plaster, there are about 20 people. It is an illustration from a treatise on wet dreams. It also shows the title of the presentation "(Wet) Dreams of the Indian Nation: Colonialism, Consumerism, and the Globalization of an Ailment", at the University of Geneva.

This image shows a sketch, black on yellowish paper. It shows a bedroom. In the bed is a dark-haired young woman in a kind of négligée. She is sitting up in bed. Next to the bed is a man in a coat, his arms on his hips. On the bed is a top hat and cane, next to it an Easter egg, opened, with a bottle of Cusenier inside. The title of this sketch is "The Easter egg of Nichonette", a pet name that should probably be translated as something like "the little breast".

Father Christmas - with a long white beard and in a dark coat - throws bottles of Cusenier down the chimneys of two houses in this image. Below the image it says, in French: "Long live progress! Thanks to this marvellous aeroplane, I'm doing my traditional rounds without getting tired, and next year, everyone will be in good health, because I'm bringing everyone a bottle of Oxygénée Cusenier."

This image shows a sketch, black on yellowish paper. It shows, on the very right, the Ottoman sultan Abdul Hamid II. He wears a uniform, with medals and a fez, holding up both hands. To his left are three men, each of them holding up a bottle. These three men named as François-Joseph, Ferdinand and Georges, presumably Franz Joseph I of Austria, Ferdinand I of Bulgaria and George I of Greece. The image has the title "A diplomatic combination".

This image shows a sketch, black on a yellowish background. It shows two French conscripts, talking to each other. The soldier on the left is from 1909, while the one on the right is from 1809. Their uniforms are very different. The one from 1809 says: “In the past, each of us had a bâton de maréchal in our bag and that made us men!” The one from 1909, who says: “Today, we're content to carry a bottle of Cusenier Oxygen in our bag... and that makes us superhuman!”

This image shows a drawing, black on yellowish paper, of Napoleon's 1812 retreat from Moscow. In the front, you can see the silhouette of Napoleon on a horse, followed, a bit further back, by perhaps 15 riders. They are riding through the snow. On the horizon is a huge black cloud, pushed back, at the very left hand side of the drawing, by a bottle in the sky, surrounded by rays of sunshine. Below the image, it says, in French: If this beautiful sun, Oxygene Cusenier, had shone upon the Grande Armée in 1812, France would have been saved once again!”

The title of the drawing is "A New Sun of Austerlitz".

Behind him, on the right of the image, sits an ape - possibly a Barbary macaque - which is, however, the same size as the explorer. He sits cross-legged and drinks from a bottle of absinthe. He is copying the explorer, as both of them hold their left hand over their hearts. Behind them is a coastline, with palm trees and, I think, some roman ruins.

Below the image, it says, in French: "The Explorer. - The sun, the rain, the fatigue, I fear nothing, thanks to OXYGÉNÉE CUSENIER, and, thank God! I have enough to finish my journey: my bottle is barely started!"

Behind the European man is a Moroccan man, holding keys in his hands. This man is dark-skinned and depicted i an extremely racist way.

Below them, the caption says, in French: "Allah be praised! Yielding to the remonstrances of European diplomats Sultan Moulay-Hafid humanised himself. From now on, he leaves one hand to his captives so that they can take their glass of OXYGÉNÉE CUSENIER before each meal."

Below it is the address of the "Compagnie des Boissons Gazeuses Hygiéniques d'Alger".

This image shows a printed page in a newspaper, black on white, but rather blurred. It shows three adverts, each outlined by a decorative border. The top one - for the "pastilles and elixir Bouty" - has the ingredient of "pepsin-cocaine" and was recommended for stomach disorders. The second one, "Vin de Vial", with "quinine, meat juice and lacto-phosphate of lime" was recommended as a tonic to ill and recovering people, to be consumed three times a day. The third one, "Vin Girard de la Croix de Genève", was a "iodo-tannic phosphate wine" with a cod-liver oil substitute, recommended for people chest diseases, rheumatism, asthma, bronchitis, heart conditions and more.

This image shows two adverts, side to side. On the left is an advert for the French aperitif Clacquesin, claiming that it "is the most invigorating, the most refreshing, the most pleasant of aperitifs". The one on the right is for the French aperitif Bénédictine, which is described as "strengthening delicate stomachs".

These adverts can be found in "Alger-Programmes, le petit Echo des théâtres et concerts de l'Algérie", published on the 10.12.1921, p. 1.

This is a drawn image in black and white. It shows a man in traditional North African clothes, playing a flute. In front of him is a snake (a cobra?), whose head, however, seems to be made up of a money bag. Above and below him, it says, in French: "To charm fortune, buy a National Lottery ticket".

This image can be found in "Le Progrès, journal de l'arrondissement de Guelma", published on the 22.12.1941, p. 2.

This advert is a black and white drawing. It shows a middle-aged European woman in elegant clothes in a hat and gloves, seated at a table. In front of her is a glass, a bottle of Phénix and a bottle of water. She has raised her right arm in the air, signaling and smiling. Above her her, it says: "Your aperitif". Below her, it says, in capitals: "Anisette Phénix". Below this, there are a few words in Arabic, advertising for the "famous" Phénix.

This advert can be found in "L'Echo de la presse musulmane", published on the 04.07.1936, p. 3.

Drawn advert in black and white, blurry. It shows a map of Morocco with roads between big cities. Below it is a car in front of a North African city. On the forefront, on the right, are three Moroccans, in traditional clothes. One of them seems to be looking at the car. Above it, it says: "Tout le Maroc par la CTM (Compagnie de Transports au Maroc)". Below the image, it says: Société Générale de Transports & Tourisme au Maroc" and "Route de Rabat à Casablanca".

The advert can be found in "L'Algérie illustrée", on the 01.10.1928, p. 26.

Black and white drawing, showing an older man with glasses and a white beard with a hood, holding up a bottle in his right hand. Next to the man, it says: "It is the best" and, below him, it says "Limonade Hamoud", produced by the "Compagnie Générale des Boissons Gazeuses Hygiéniques d'Alger" and an address in Algiers.

This advert was published in "L'Algérie Illustrée", on the 01.05.1922, p. 22.

The image is a black and white drawing, showing a black pyramid shape. In this pyramid, there is a large (African) elephant, facing to the left, with a rider and - I guess - an Indian howdah, with a passenger. In front of this elephant is a truck, driving towards the reader. Underneath this image it says, in large letters: "LATIL". On the right hand side, next to the pyramid, it says: "vans, trucks, tractors, buses, coaches, municipal vehicles" in French and gives an address in Algiers.

This advert was published in "L'Afrique du Nord illustrée", on the 19.05.1928, p. 57.

This is a dark still from the movie "Murder on the Orient Express". It is filmed from the inside of a cabin, showing the open wooden door and parts of the corridor. In the door stands the actor John Gielgud, who plays Beddoes, in a dark suit, seen from the back. Above his head is an advert for "Liqueur Bénédictine", only partly seen.
