You can learn a lot about an individual just by reading through his code, even in hexadecimal. Mel was, I think, an unsung genius. Perhaps my greatest shock came when I found an innocent loop that had no test in it. No test. *None*. Common sense said it had to be a closed loop, where the program would circle, forever, endlessly. Program control passed right through it, however, and safely out the other side. It took me two weeks to figure it out. The RPC-4000 computer had a really modern facility called an index register. It allowed the programmer to write a program loop that used an indexed instruction inside; each time through, the number in the index register was added to the address of that instruction, so it would refer to the next datum in a series. He had only to increment the index register each time through. Mel never used it. Instead, he would pull the instruction into a machine register, add one to its address, and store it back. He would then execute the modified instruction right from the register. The loop was written so this additional execution time was taken into account just as this instruction finished, the next one was right under the drum's read head, ready to go. But the loop had no test in it. The vital clue came when I noticed the index register bit, the bit that lay between the address and the operation code in the instruction word, was turned on, yet Mel never used the index register, leaving it zero all the time. When the light went on it nearly blinded me. He had located the data he was working on near the top of memory, the largest locations the instructions could address, so, after the last datum was handled, incrementing the instruction address would make it overflow. The carry would add one to the operation code, changing it to the next one in the instruction set: a jump instruction. Sure enough, the next program instruction was in address location zero, and the program went happily on its way.

Positive Steam game review: Only Danish cars can run this fast. I see a couple of prominent review on here are comparing WHAT THE CAR? disfavorably to the studio's previous outing WHAT THE GOLF?. I don't think that's quite fair; no only is Car significantly cheaper while containing even more content and no fewer laughs, but it's a more focused and specialised game than Golf. Now I love WHAT THE GOLF?, it's one of my favourite games of all time, but I appreciate that Triband continues trying new and novel ideas and iterating on those. There's definitely fewer parodies in Car, but there's so many jokes crammed into every tiny bit of the game, and the core gameplay loop is extremely solid, while still constantly introducing new variations on it. I also really enjoy the ability for the community to build their own levels - it's fun trying to grind the leaderboards, and at the release I spent many hours watching various streamers compete against each other first in the demo and then in the final game. I'm really hoping to see the speedrun community latch unto the game. I should mention that my playtime is low here because I've previously spent a lot of time playing this on the tablet. Anyways, buy this and enjoy it for what it is: An expertly crafted comedy game, in which the comedy consistently lands - which is really hard to do with video games where you often cannot control the timing. Okay, maybe the Flintstone car can run pretty fast as well....

A guy skates down a hill doing a handstand, driving past two guys in a jeep going the opposite direction. As he reaches the bottom of the hill he is greeted with a co-conspirator who drives him back up, again passing the jeep, and hands him a shotgun and a blow-up doll. The guy once again drives down the hill, towards the jeep, but this guy hiding his gun behind the blow-up doll that he's holding in his arms. He shoots the driver of the jeep, who is injured but survive. The jeep turns around to follow the skateboard guy, the guy in the passenger see pulls out a bazooka, and as they send the skateboard guy flying with the car, he shoots him with a rocket in mid-air. Hen then also shoots the blow-up doll.
