Kickstarter Trust & Safety (Kickstarter) May 20, 2026, 1:02 PM EDT Hi, Thank you for reaching out, and we want to start by saying we're sorry. Last week, we introduced a new set of mature content guidelines. Our intention was to reduce the number of disruptive mid-campaign issues creators were experiencing with payment and compliance reviews. But in trying to close the gap between Kickstarter’s policies and Stripe’s policies, we introduced standards that didn’t reflect our values or our long history of supporting creative expression. We are removing those updated guidelines and reverting to our previous Rules, which prohibit pornography and illegal content. Projects are still subject to the rules and restrictions of payment processors and financial partners, including Stripe’s policies. That means there may still be cases where a project approved by Kickstarter later faces review or restriction from Stripe. Though this route is an imperfect temporary solution, it allows us to stand in what we believe in — and continue advocating for creators directly when issues arise. Good afternoon, I am writing today regarding the recent changes to Kickstarter's platform stance with regard to adult content, which amount to regressive obscenity censorship. I am a superbacker who has supported a huge amount of Kickstarters to the tune of thousands of dollars. Several of the projects I have backed contain nudity, adult content, sex, and sexuality. Many of these could fall afoul of your new purity tests. I am old enough to have fought against censorship many times before. I am acutely aware of how carefully-worded guidelines are uniquely dishonest, and how no one will pass an obscenity test the administrator wants them to fail; in this case, you will be the ones weighing things with your fingers on the scale. I am deeply concerned about this policy and I am deeply disappointed, again, in Kickstarter. Lately I have been backing far more projects on Backerkit because of decisions made by Kickstarter with regard to the laughable Blockchain grift and then the laughable AI grift, and it sure seems like your leadership is continuing to make abysmal decisions, so I fear more and more of my dollars will continue to vacate this platform and find their way to Backerkit instead.
