Ida B Wells' Winchester Rifle @dytsras.bsky.social · 12d

it's really quite astonishing on how few major works have been done on this towering lady. But 151 years ago today, the child of formerly enslaved parents, Mary McLeod Bethune was born on July 10, 1875 in South Carolina. Bethune literally connects the end of slavery to the civil rights era

I'll have to get this book for my grandmother... She'd love it I suspect. She's a major history buff and this seems right up her alley.

I looked for it on Libby and unfortunately none of my 7 libraries has it. I tagged it as "notify me" if any of them gets it in stock.

There are quite a few more untold/little told stories like this. Daisy Lampkin, great friend and political ally of Bethune, for example:

My first grade school in Hattiesburg MS was Mary Bethune Elementary. She is a giant.

That’s a very tall illustrious name here in Volusia County Florida. Her name is on our lips daily.

Somehow, she has completely missed my radar. That sucks. I’m definitely going to read this book to learn more about her and her connection.

I did a research paper on her for world history in 10th grade back in 1996. I had to pick a name from a list, and I picked one I didn't know.

She's gorgeous.

It's a lot to take in. In 1940 Hattie McDaniel won an Oscar in a Hollywood movie for portraying a slave. Doubt that the audience knew that her parents had been enslaved. Our history is much closer to us than the mainstream would want to admit.

I’ve been reading so much on the period because i learned nothing in public school or college about the Jim Crow South, how have i not heard of her?? Getting the book now. Thanks.
