Long before Trump was referring to Black people as "the blacks..." or "my african american," dog-whistles used to be a lot more subtle post-Civil Rights Era. You could lose your job. Upend your political aspirations. So for a time, people were careful about the words they used 🧵

2. I have vague memories of 1988, but the first presidential campaign i strongly remember was the 1992 campaign between Bill Clinton, George Bush Sr, and Ross Perot. Ross Perot said something that not only hurt his campaign, but ushered in one of the more famous modern dog whistles
