Luxon’s obscene exemption is the point. The inconvenient truth is that his enjoyment of ‘this’ job (and it is enjoyment) the enjoyment of the man who tells a population of strangers that he is wealthy and sorted, is entirely dependent on the need of the people in front of him. Choice only shines when it is posed against a background of compulsion. A man who tells the unemployed of Aotearoa that work is optional for him is not making a gaffe. He is showing them, with total accuracy, where they stand in his fantasy: they must remain needy so he can enjoy his job.
