Nine newspapers to cut 30 roles in further redundancies
Staff numbers at the Sydney Morning Herald and the Age will be cut by 30 in another round of redundancies announced by Nine’s publishing arm today.

The managing director of publishing, Tory Maguire, called staff to a town hall meeting at 10.30am on Tuesday to unveil what she said was structural change in a digital-first era.
Maguire said in an email seen by Guardian Australia:
"The best way to protect our quality journalism is to ensure our organisation adapts to a changing media landscape, that we’re growing commercially and investing in new areas which connect with new audiences.
In particular we need to keep shifting towards the digital-first future."

Earlier this year Nine made a number of roles in its broadcasting division redundant. This new round of redundancies will not affect the Australian Financial Review.

Lee Hanson says her mother's comments about the White Australia policy were 'misinterpreted'
Lee Hanson, daughter of One Nation leader Pauline Hanson, has said her mother’s comments about the White Australia policy have been “misinterpreted”.
In an interview on a podcast hosted by the far-right British activist Tommy Robinson, Pauline Hanson blamed the end of the White Australia policy for creating what she sees as problems with migration.
Lee Hanson told Sky on Sunday night that “snippets” of her mother’s comments were “misinterpreted”: "I know who Pauline is, Mum is, and I know that’s not what her intention was in any way. I do think snippets of it was misinterpreted. Under no way, shape, or form did she say she wished the White Australia policy hadn’t have been changed. She does not support it and she does not want it back. So I do believe it’s been taken out of context.

US president Donald Trump once again warned Iran to make a deal on Tuesday, saying a "whole civilization will die tonight" if an agreement is not reached to end the conflict.
Writing on Truth Social, he said:

A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don't want that to happen, but it probably will.
However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS?

Israel warns it will pursue Iran’s next supreme leader
The Israeli military warned it would continue pursuing every successor of Iran’s next supreme leader.

In a post on X in Farsi, the Israeli military said it would also pursue every person who seeks to appoint a successor for slain supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, referring to the clerical body charged with selecting Iran’s next supreme leader.

The comments came after Iranian news agency Mehr news reported that he clerical body that will choose Iran’s next supreme leader has more or less reached a majority consensus.

Trump calls Andrew's arrest 'a very sad thing'
Donald Trump has given his reaction to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest in the past hour telling reporters on Air Force One:

"I’m the expert in a way because I’ve been totally exonerated so I can speak about it …
I think it’s a shame. I think it’s very sad. I think it’s so bad for the royal family. It’s very, very sad. To me, it’s a very sad thing. When I see that, it’s a very sad thing …
To see that and to see everything that’s going on with his brother, who is coming to our country very soon, the king … so I think it’s a very sad thing."

King Charles is due to visit the US in April.

Speaking about himself, Trump repeated that he is the one that “can talk about it” because he is “totally exonerated”. He added:

"I did nothing."

Anthony Albanese linked a series of threats towards Sydney’s Lakemba mosque with One Nation’s Pauline Hanson’s rhetoric towards the country’s Muslims.

Albanese was asked on ABC Radio Sydney if there was a link in his mind between Hanson’s recent remarks and threats of violence. The prime minister replied:

Of course there is, because it legitimises it. It mainstreams it. And Pauline Hansen is a divisive figure. She’s made a political career out of seeking to divide Australians against each other. And what we need is more unity, not more division.

Pauline Hansen is ready to divide people. She is someone who often doesn’t participate in the Senate but is busy off just campaigning. She’s a negative force in Australian politics.

Ilhan Omar attacked with unidentified substance at town hall in Minneapolis

At her first town hall of the year in Minneapolis, congresswoman Ilhan Omar was sprayed with an unidentified substance while making her opening remarks. Omar had just started speaking when a man sprayed her from the front row of the community center where the event is taking place in the north of the city.

The man was swiftly tackled to the ground by security, but Omar insisted on continuing the town hall despite the incident – refusing to let it stop her addressing constituents. The attacker, who did not identify a particular political affiliation when he sprayed Omar, was quickly escorted out of the room, as the crowd applauded his removal.

“I learned at a young age that you don’t give into threats,” Omar said.

Alex Pretti's parents condemn 'sickening lies' of Trump administration

Pretti’s family released a statement on Saturday evening in which they said they were “heartbroken but also very angry” after Donald Trump and his officials referred to Pretti as a “gunman” who had approached US border patrol officers.

“The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trump’s murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He has his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down all while being pepper sprayed,” the family statement said. “Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man.”

In countries under the Iron Curtain, people felt powerless, but they weren’t, that was Havel’s message. And also, Carney’s. The job of power is to make people believe they have no power, but it’s a lie.

And it’s the same in Minnesota. It’s because these protestors have power that they have to be stopped, crushed, silenced. ICE is shooting unarmed civilians in cold blood and beating disabled military veterans to prove that they can.

But the more brutality they use, the more performative the violence, the more it reveals their own weakness.

As the father and daughter were arriving home on Thursday, agents entered their backyard and driveway area, Kira Kelley, one of the family's lawyers, wrote in a filing. The officers did not have a warrant, the attorney said. One agent then allegedly broke the glass window of the father's car while the girl was inside.
The mother was by the door and stepped inside the house as the agents approached, Kelley wrote. The agents refused to allow the father to bring his daughter to the mother or other family members "waiting terrified inside the home".
The two-year-old and her father were then placed in an immigration agent's vehicle, which Kelley wrote did not have a car seat.

“You don’t want to speak too loudly, because you just fear retaliation, and that’s a heavy hand to be dealt when you’re just trying to do your job,” one prosecutor said.
