“Minneapolis ARA’s pro-choice work also gave them new tools for standing up to street fascists. When a nazi bonehead committed a gay bashing, ARA and their allies brought two hundred people to the lawn of his home for a queer kiss-in. One of the survivors of the attack attended and told a local newspaper, “I felt a lot better … to know that there was a really strong showing, more than I anticipated. Any sense of isolation that I might have had from the incident was washed away.”

Their first big opportunity to put their pro-choice and queer-positive politics into practice came when they learned that the Catholic far-right organization Human Life International (HLI) had planned its annual conference in neighboring St. Paul, Minnesota, in April 1997. “As ARA Minneapolis, we decided that they fit the definition of fascism to us,” says Katrina. “They were really trying to limit the rights of women and queer people, so we decided to take them on with the same kind of energy and strategies that we were using against white supremacists.”
