EBUG was taken aback to read this article in the Evening News No plans to reinstate bus stops on North Bridge when route reopens fully to traffic As you will know, we have previously argued against the blanket removal of bus stops, while accepting that a few are sited overly close together. However, in recent times it seems the removal of stops has focussed on those which are clearly convenient for passengers, not on the redundant. For example: Leven St, West Maitland St, and, (temporarily) outside the Cameo last year. Then there's the shambles on George IV Bridge, and Great Junction St. We could also cite the plans for Leith Connections phase 3...etc etc. The logic of having no stops on the main (parapetted) bridge itself is understood. But it means there's a clear need for stops at the ends of the bridge, i.e. between the High St and the Scotsman Hotel, and near/opposite the Balmoral Hotel. We think the closest stop for right-turning buses on Princes St is not even outside Apple's shop, because it is difficult to manoeuvre buses from there into the right turn lane. We have, of course, previously noted the benefit of removing most general traffic from the east end of Princes St. Which it was, apparently successfully, before being reinstated 'temporarily' during the Trams to Newhaven works. As an aside, I presume the fanciful idea of lifts from Waverley Station to North Bridge is firmly off the agenda?

ESTABLISH A ‘BUS SERVICE STANDARD’ AND A ‘BUS STOP GUARANTEE’ The availability and quality of bus services and stops varies widely across Scotland, as set out in this report by Transform. National minimum standards would deliver equity and assurance to passengers. While this does not mean identical provision across Scotland, a framework could be categorised by Urban/Semi Urban/Rural areas, for example. At bus stops, it could include seating, lighting, maintenance and service information standards. Our ask: establish a standard over 3 years followed by long-term implementation. Costs: minimal.
