Chicago was once adamant in its advice to avoid using “overly” and instead use “unduly” or “over-” as a prefix. Well, no more. Chicago 18 (5.254) has given its seal of approval to “overly”: “Once frowned on by sticklers, this term is now unexceptionable (as in the phrase overly tired).”
