Lord, We have a cat who must surely be among the more independent, haughty, arrogant, frustrating of all your creatures. She needs nothing and nobody, She cries to be fed and let out and in, but she never says thank you, and she only tolerates companionship, and if she nuzzles you, you just know it's only because she itches. Well, Lord, it’s hard to love that cat. How can you love that which doesn’t seem to care a bit?

December 31st Tonight Mack came to go with me to the watch party which was held at Dr. Rowland’s. The party was to be given from 10 to 13 o’clock. Mrs Cooper stayed over here for quite a while before we left and we had lots of fun “chatting.” Gee! but we had lots of fun at the party. At 15 minutes of 12 Gwendolyn Patton gave a reading which was
December 30th Bill called up early this A.M. and asked for a date. He wasn’t so peeved after all. He and D came at 10 o’clock and stayed until 12. They teased me the entire time. Dr. L and Dr. R came while they were here. This afternoon Bill and D (T) carried us to see “Little Annie Roony.” It was very good. Essie Mae and T emptied all my candy into a paper sack. Bill came back tonight and went with me to prayer meeting and then over to see A S.
December 28th Bill Scott came to see me this afternoon and we went out to get M. She came and took supper with us. “Mack” called up and asked me for a date while Bill was here and told him he might come. Well Bill got peeved and wouldn’t go with us to the show. Mack and I went anyway and saw “A Kiss for Cinderella.” It was very silly but we enjoyed laughing. We saw the Bethany basket ball team.
December 27th Tonight, A S and R C came to see us. I kept expecting G but he did not come. At about nine o’clock he called me up and said that he left Lexington at 5:30 and had just arrived in Greensboro. “His car froze up.” He wanted another date but I told him that I was “dated up.”
December 26th I went with R H to a party at C J’s home tonight. We had a wonderful time. Just as I was ready to leave G called me up and asked for a date. Of course I couldn’t give him one for tonight but I told him he might come tomorrow night.
December 25th Christmas Morning! Supposedly a happy day but our hearts were sad. We went to a sunrise service at the Christian church. I tried to take a part in the program but my heart was too “full.” We put a beautiful wreath of flowers on Mama’s grave. Gee! but we have missed her.
December 24th Another day spent in the preparation for Christmas. We have gotten so many cards from relatives and friends. Mack sent me a hand-painted card.
December 23rd Almost the entire day has been spent in shopping and getting ready for Christmas.
December 22nd We merely pretended to have classes this morning. M and I decorated the stage and Christmas tree. In the afternoon we had a short program after which the presents were given out by Old Santa (Mr. F) and the entire high school was served with Eskimo pies which were given by the faculty. Harvey came to carry me home.
December 21st Miss W gave a recital or musical program tonight. I sang “There were Shepherds.” We exchanged Christmas gifts tonight. I had D’s name and B D had mine. We had such a nice time but it was all too much for me. I could not keep my eyes dry. I’ve packed my suit case and satchel.
December 20th Per usual I went to Sunday and church. Mc walked with me home. This afternoon we went to the “National” and heard a musical program given for the benefit of the “Empty Stocking Fund.” Harvey brought me to Summerfield and I came from there to Bethany with H.
December 19th Shopping? – Well, I guess. I spent almost all day down town. Sister did not come until late so I had to eat luncheon by myself. I ate some sandwiches down at the O’Henry drug store. I’m tired of “rambling” around. I was invited to a party at Mr. F’s tonight but I didn’t want to go back to Bethany so soon.
December 18th We played Alamance this afternoon at Bethany and we won the victory. O.C.J brought me home. When I got here Mrs. C called me over to her house to get a package that had been left there for me. It was a large box of candy from G. Bertha and I ate supper down town. I got a letter today from “Mc.”
December 17th “Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” I wonder if going to bed early one night out of 365 would do any good. H and I retired at 9:15 tonight. We are both sadly in need of a rest though.
December 16th I had a date with G tonight. He carried H, E D. and me to Greensboro to see Harold Loyd in “The Freshman.” It was a scream.
December 15th We had our other classes this afternoon and night. I guess Dr. Martin thinks that we are a restless bunch of people. We just simply “cut up” on class. There are only two more such ordeals though.
December 14th These extension classes are the banes of our existence. We’re going to have another class tomorrow. Tonight A, D, H and I played “Bridge.” It has been reported that Miss W’s father is married.
December 13th I sang a solo at Sunday School this A.M. Mr. Herman Caviness preached this morning. Harvey brought me back to Bethany. P F carried D, S and me out for a ride.
December 12th H and I spent the entire day down town. We shopped until twelve o’clock, then we got with sister and went to the Jefferson cafe for luncheon. In the afternoon we went to a show at the Imperial. H went home. Sister, H, N, John R, H’s brother, and a Mr. T from Winston and I went to Guilford college to see a play called “Adam and Eva.”
December 11th H and I started to Greensboro with the D girls and lo! we had a time. Yes, tire trouble. We sat on the side of the road for about two hours. H and I went to see “The Son of his Father” by Harold Bell Wright. H couldn’t get home so she spent the weekend with me.
December 10th Bethany 3 – Brown Summit 2 – Such was the results of a girls basket ball game that was played here today. I got a letter from G asking me for a date. I practiced voice tonight for the first time in ages. I have to sing at church on Sunday.
December 9th Guess whom I got a letter from today – none other than S M. My old desk mate and school chum of long ago. I was indeed surprised to hear from her but pleasantly so. I also heard from Irene Cotten.
December 8th This is the first night that I haven’t had to “go somewhere” in a long time. I really enjoyed staying here and working. We played basket ball this afternoon and I fell down and skinned my elbow but not badly.
December 7th A test? Yes a test. We took on our extention work. I was really excited. I hope I didn’t “flunk” though. D wrote “Mac” a card about G but I wouldn’t let her send it.
December 6th We went to Sunday School and church. “Mac” walked with me from church and teased some more about G. W came for me this afternoon and brought me back to Bethany. Tonight we enjoyed the music of the Edisons.

December 5th “N” and I worked hard all the morning – cleaning up and cooking. This afternoon I spent in correcting papers. Tonight Harvey and I went out to Sumner to get Sister. I forgot to tell you that I went to see Mrs. Cooper this A.M.
December 4th W took me home this afternoon. Mack came to see me. I certainly played “dumb.” I introduced Mack to Harvey as Mr. G. I don’t believe that Mack will ever get over it. He has teased me so much. I had a big time though. I believe the best that I have ever had with him.
December 3d Tonight when the teachers found out that I had a date with G they began a joke. A mock wedding was their plan. They got netting, flowers, rice, shoes, tin cans, etc. Everyone was pepped up to the highest pitch but I slipped out the back door and when G came I got in his car and we rode off. The teachers were very disappointed. We went to Winston-Salem and heard Will Rogers and a group from Zigfield Follies. They were good.
December 2d Yesterday I thought that no day could be worse but today has topped the climax. This afternoon I did everything that I could to keep from crying. I even stayed over at school and helped serve supper to the ballplayers but when I came home I completely collapsed. I cried for over an hour. Everything seems so “blue.” I did not go to supper. However, I did go to Parent-Teacher’s meeting.
December 1st “Despondent” is no name for the way I have felt today.
11-30-1925 Two more lectures for Dr. Martin.
November 29th To church but too late for preaching. I saw “Mack” but left before he had a chance to say very much to me. W came this afternoon and offered to bring me back to Bethany but I already had a date with G. G came and took supper with us. He brought me to Bethany and stayed until – (Well – I’m not supposed to tell that.)

November 27th Women’s work is never done. Sister and I have “put out” work today (suppose my English class could see that) We got letters from M H that she was sick and could not come to see us.
November 26th M H has not appeared on the scene yet. We have just simply “loafed” today. I wrote Ernest a two folder letter this afternoon but it seemed too “blue” to send so I burned it. Mr. and Mrs. S came to see us tonight.
November 25th We have expected M H and her mother all day but have seen nothing of them. Perhaps they’ll come tomorrow. G wanted me to go with him to the Va.-Carolina game but I stayed at home, expecting M H to come. We went over to the cemetery this afternoon. G left tonight.
November 24th Back to Greensboro again. I came home with the Ds. Essie Mae was here when I arrived. We went down town and came back with Bertha. Daddy went to Eastern Virginia tonight. G G came. I surely did not know him. He has changed so much. Incidentally, he wants one of my pictures.
November 23d I had a date with G tonight. We went to Greensboro to the show. We saw Lillian and Dorothy Gish in Romola (George Eliot) A Mr. S and his girl friend from Madison went with us. “Mack” says that he thinks it’s terrible for me to monopolize G. I wonder if he really cares.
November 22d Well, I’ve dragged through another blue Monday. We managed to pull through two more extention classes. This afternoon we “bucked” H. We weren’t sure whether it was her birthday or not. I think she got rather peeved. Guess we couldn’t blame her though.
November 21st Everyone went to Sunday School except Harvey and I. We sat at home and chatted. I went to see Mrs. C in the afternoon but she was not at home. W came by for me tonight and brought me back to Bethany. I tried to get some letters written but it was almost impossible.
November 20th The grand performance of the play came off tonight. Sister, Miss H and Miss M came over to the entertainment (play). I went back to Greensboro with them. Miss B R from Greensboro spent the week-end with the Ds. Harvey came home this afternoon. He is going to spend some time with us now.
November 19th The eighth grade conducted chapel exercises again this A.M. Tonight we had a dress rehearsal of the play. You should have seen me with a “flappers’” outfit. My red cane and red scarf “took the day.” I played for the movies tonight. S, C, and B + E D gave a short program too.
November 18th What a surprise! We had a surprise holiday today. The grates were burned out of the school furnace and we were unable to have heat. I enjoyed the rest very much. We practiced the play again tonight.
November 17th My eighth grade girls entertained at chapel this morning. They sang and pantomimed “Hi-lo.” They were dressed in Japanese costumes.
November 16th We practiced the play. O’Q got a black eye. F took supper with us.
November 15th Today has certainly been filled with work for me. Besides my regular teaching – I attended a teacher’s meeting, two classes in extention work, and practiced the play. That’s too much work for me. Don’t you think so? I conducted the chapel exercises this A.M.
November 14th I went to Sunday School and preaching this A.M. Mack has gone away on his vacation so I didn’t see him. I talked with him over the phone yesterday. Mr. T told me this A.M. that a certain girl was getting mighty jealous because Mack came to Chestnut St. so often (I don’t see that he comes so often though). Brother brought me back to Bethany this afternoon. We stopped at the cemetery and put flowers on Mama’s grave.
November 13th Sister came this A.M. I cooked dinner. We went down town this afternoon to do some shopping. We got Bertha a watch for a Christmas present. It’s a secret though. We had planned to go to the show but didn’t have time. We went to see Mrs. S for a few minutes tonight.
November 12th G came tonight and carried me home. We went to the National and saw “Gloria Swanson in “Stage Struck.” It was very good. When I got home Bertha was making some pumpkin pies.
November 11th “Rain! Rain! Go away come again another day.” I’ll declare I’ve never seen such a “blue” day. I have cried almost all day. Tonight when we got ready to practice M said something to me and I began to boo! hoo! This hurt his feelings – so we had a time. He thought that he was to blame, but he wasn’t. It was just the way I felt.
November 10th The same old story – Practiced the play. We’ll certainly have to work if we give it next week. I had a long consultation with the seniors this P.M. J F, E P + K McC. They failed on their English. J cried while I was talking to him.
November 9th Our “Daily Dozen” were practiced tonight. W and I are getting to be professionals at the trade. G wanted a date for tonight but I got out of it someway. I guess I had to practice the play (?).
November 8th Another Extension class. Two of ‘em and another practice of the play. Our time is certainly taken up these days. D O practiced with us tonight. H and I went out in search of “light wood” tonight to use in kindling fires. H had brought some from her house and had left it in her car down at Baynes’.
November 7th Went to Sunday School in the rain and lost my hat on Elm street. I chased after it and after so long a time managed to get it back. G came after me this afternoon. We ate supper at Mrs. P’s then H, G and I went to Reidsville to see Miss W. She is quite ill.
November 6th Oh, it’s so very lonesome at home, now that Mama isn’t here. Remember how we used to all go down town on Saturdays? This afternoon, CJ came and stayed a long time with us. I enjoyed having her very much. Mrs. S brought us some of the wedding flowers (E’s wedding.)
