I am a sucker for big spectacle fights and Metal Gear Solid 4 is divisive and you may say “what boss fight…?” and it’s this one and you go “ohhhh not one of the sexy ones” and nah I mean Raging Raven was pretty good but piloting Rex and Ray jumps out of the water. Fuck yeah. Hurt me more.

Even though the gameplay in 4 was kinda sparse compared to the cutscenes. This and the final boss made me feel like at least the gameplay was dense in pure thrill. Jesus I really can't contain my excitement for Master Collection Vol2.

Quiet’s whole deal was Kojima trying to provide normies with something approaching the sheer level of pornography the Rex vs Ray fight brought to aficionados of giant robots smashing stuff. And…well, he tried his best. Even Kojima has his limits.

It's always made me feel like I'm living on a different planet when people say "Act 4 isn't good, it's just MGS1 fanservice." Yeah, I know it is. And that's the whole point. That's why it's fucking based.

Having the final/swan song game in the series (narratively at least) let you actually pilot and control one of the series namesakes was amazing. And not just any old Metal Gear but REX, the fan favourite and most iconic one.

the metal gear fight is cool because the entire rest of the series, you fight one, never pilot one. I also liked the laughing octopus fight, the hide-and-seek gimmick was fun

It's so funny reading this and remembering that part right after I pulled up this old gif for unrelated reasons.

If you’re a sucker for big spectacle boss fights you should play FF16 at some point. Those boss fights are the best part of the game.
