It does seem mostly to originate from folks projecting an aura of shock and trauma, on that I strongly agree. Personally I think it's really sad to see people who so often viciously advocate such a limited pristine small version of self, who demand totalized understanding.

that is true, but computers as expressions of self was original selling point (that was arg of sherry turkle’s 80s in her first book)
