Today, the EIS, stands in full solidarity with the wider trade union movement and the people of Palestine, and calls on the UK Government to: 1. Pressure the Israeli government to respect international law and end the illegal occupation 2. Ban trade with the illegal settlements 3. Suspend the UK-Israel trade agreement 4. End all arms trade and military collaboration with Israel in line with international law 5. Work to ensure that reconstruction in Gaza is Palestinian led, involves trade unions, and delivers decent work and quality public services.
Dear Ms Cooper I write on behalf of the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS), Scotland’s largest teacher trade union, with almost 65,000 members across all sectors and career grades, on the matter of the workplace day of action for Palestine on the 14th of May 2026. The 14th of May commemorates the 1948 Nakba (catastrophe), when approximately 750,000 Palestinians were displaced from their homes to Gaza, the West Bank and the wider Middle East. Today, there are approximately 5.9 million refugees. Palestinians’ right to self-determination and to return must be respected. Today, the EIS, stands in full solidarity with the wider trade union movement and the people of Palestine, and calls on the UK Government to: 1. Pressure the Israeli government to respect international law and end the illegal occupation 2. Ban trade with the illegal settlements 3. Suspend the UK-Israel trade agreement 4. End all arms trade and military collaboration with Israel in line with international law 5. Work to ensure that reconstruction in Gaza is Palestinian led, involves trade unions, and delivers decent work and quality public services. Commitment to these actions would demonstrate clear and concerted efforts by the UK Government to pursue lasting peace in Gaza and the West Bank. On behalf of the EIS, I urge you to take clear action to further genuine efforts towards a just, lasting and comprehensive peace that is consistent with international law, delivers a two-state solution, and is underpinned by respect for human rights, workers’ rights and democracy, and with equality for all. Despite the importance of the Higher and Further Education Sectors, these sectors have been subject to significant and sustained cuts in funding, leading to fewer Further Education qualifications delivered and a cap on Higher Education places for Scottish domiciled students.
Investment in education strengthens the foundations for the future, helping our young people develop and look forward to prosperous lives. But it is also important for enhancing the wellbeing both of staff and students during their time at school. The costs IPPR (Scotland) have estimated for implementing these policies are not insignificant, but international evidence suggests it is highly plausible that these would be outweighed by the benefits.
Critically, universal provision would cut household costs, especially for low-income families, and particularly for families with more than one child.
Teachers have the right to work and pupils have the right to learn in an environment which is safe and free from violence and aggression.

Scotland must invest far more in early intervention measures, and professional support for Early Years teachers and practitioners or we will not address the gaps resulting from the high levels of poverty and socioeconomic disadvantage that scourge Scotland currently.

The EIS believes that the Scottish Government and the Scottish Parliament need to do more to ensure that all children and young people in Scotland, from Early Years to Higher Education, receive a quality education, and that the system is resourced at a level that realises this aim.
